Players, do your homework and watch the games
They had an interview with the Brewers Jake Bauers on MLB today. They were discussing watching the game. He said “we have a really smart team. We pride ourselves on watching the game.” I say “if you watch the game, you will never make the same mistake ONCE.” You learn from other people’s mistakes. There are a lot of distractions in the dugout. The iPad may be #1. Don’t get me wrong the iPad is valuable. You just need to find the right time to look at it & strike a balance between the iPad & watching the game.

What about that 11 pitch at bat from Bauers (Brewers) last night. As old school as they come. Grinding it out, frustrating the pitcher, lifting his pitch count significantly, and ending with a great result … that deflated the pitcher and his entire team. So much so, he gave up a bomb to the next hitter also … likely because of residue from what he just experienced the batter before….. AND YET we still have high school hitters that can’t figure out the importance of grinding out at Bats. Their strike three “swing for the fence” looks like a 3-0 green light. Meanwhile, the winning teams are battling their tails off to get the ball in play, preferably hard, but ultimately in play to make the defense have to field and throw it under pressure. Hoping this year’s MLB playoffs (Brewers, Rays, guardians) will start a new trend that works its way all the way down to Youth Travel Ball

High School Baseball Players: As fall ball wraps up, offseason workouts are about to begin for many high school programs. Friendly reminder: Make your high school team's offseason workouts a priority. I understand every situation is different, and there are a lot of great private hitting and pitching instructors out there who do an incredible job helping players develop. I'm a believer in getting extra work outside of your high school program. The more quality reps you can get, the better. But I also think it's important to remember that your high school workouts matter. Being there, putting in the work, and showing your commitment to your teammates and coaches goes a long way. Ideally, your high school workouts and private instruction should complement each other, not compete with each other. At the end of the day, your high school coach is the one making out the lineup. Just something to keep in mind as offseason workouts get started.

Want to throw with more accuracy and consistency without sacrificing arm strength? Watch how the best infielders in the world move + throw. Learn to use a short arm stroke, or “V Slot,” to create hand speed, whippiness and clean, repeatable throwing actions. You’ll see it throughout professional and college baseball, especially with infielders and catchers. And these same principles can translate to the outfield and even the mound. Short. Quick. Repeatable. Build an arm action you can trust when the game speeds up.

Get that fundamental work in daily. No field, no problem.
Self feeds are one of the most underrated tools you have. It’s not ideal, but when you let your creativity take over, you can get real work in completely on your own. Add it to your training arsenal as an individual work option, or use it as a warm up before your main ground ball work. Here’s why it matters. Self feeds force your eyes to judge the hop and relay that to your body, getting your feet and hands on time together for the short hop. It looks easy. It’s not, especially when you’re learning it. But it’s one of the best ways to train your timing and eliminate in between hops. You’ll know instantly when you’re late. The hop gets too high, and that’s your sign you missed the short hop. Get creative. Get work in, even when it isn’t convenient.

If you can accomplish these in your fall: Get stronger Get more mobile More fluid/smooth in movements Read a book on the mental game and apply it Give time to the fundamentals each day You will crush the spring

The #1 staple drill for every infielder. The Ozzie Drill. Named after Ozzie Smith, one of the best shortstops to ever play the game. Ozzie used to do this with someone hitting fungoes at him. Pure hands and reaction, reading whatever bounce came off the bat. We modified it. Instead of a fungo, we use a feeder who fires the ball in, aiming for a short hop. But it's a human throwing it, not a machine, so you get natural misses. Those in-between hops, not quite short and not quite in the air, are what actually make this drill work. The fielder has no time to think. Just react. Hesitation doesn't work here. No time to overthink it. It forces pure instinct and athleticism out of every rep. Get great at this drill and it starts showing up in games. Stuff that used to be hard starts looking routine. Run this one daily. Save it and share it with an infielder or coach who needs it.

The same applies in the realm of sports. So many think they are too good to do simple better and master winning fundamentals. If it’s not entertaining to them, it’s not perceived as valuable. Sad reality.
Beginners try to skip the basics. Masters obsess over the basics.

Fall in love with the boring. Daily habits allow you to do amazing things when it matters.

You can’t spell fundamentals without fun. Do them consistently to have more fun when it counts.

Tom said it well. Life is hard. Sports are hard. There are no shortcuts to being great. Do the work and get rewarded over time.
Talent might open the door. Consistency keeps you in the room. “To be successful at anything, you don’t have to be special. You just have to be what most people aren’t: consistent, determined and willing to work for it. No shortcuts.” - Tom Brady
