Pleased to have attended WHO’s #EMRC73 in Cairo. Key takeaway: commitments must become measurable health gains through coordinated action, stronger partnerships, country ownership, and accountability.
EMPHNET participated in the 73rd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean. The session brought together health ministers and senior officials from the Region’s 22 countries and territories to set regional health priorities. bit.ly/4edqVEs

What will it take to #EndPolio? Senior health leaders at #EMRC73 share their answers, and their tribute to the people working every day to get us there. Different voices, one shared goal: a world free from polio.
What will it take to #EndPolio? And how would you describe the people working tirelessly to make it happen? We asked health leaders and partners at #EMRC73 to answer both questions in just a few words. Different voices, one shared goal: a world free from polio. #Partners4Health

A month and a half into the campaign, it felt good to be back in Cairo for the @WHOEMRO #EMRC73, with a better understanding and a wider perspective of what WHO needs. Our experience delivering health services even in the most complex conflict settings, the focus on protecting healthcare, and the flagship initiatives I advanced as an RD offer lessons for Member States all over the world. Very proud of what the team has achieved. Along the way, I had the chance to meet old and new friends, Ministers and leaders who genuinely want to strengthen WHO. I listened to their advice and shared my ideas as I prepare for the next RC with the @WHOWPRO Member States next week. Stay tuned.

Delighted to meet again with Bahrain’s Minister of Health Dr Jaleela Al Sayed Jawad Hasan and her @MOH_Bahrain team during the #EMRC73. Bahrain is a regional leader on healthy cities. All four of its governorates are now recognised under WHO’s Healthy Cities initiative, a milestone I was proud to mark in person last December. I also walked her through my campaign platform: a WHO that earns trust, delivers impact and proves its value. She spoke about the importance of multilateralism and of WHO for every Member State, especially when diseases cross borders, and said she will always be an advocate and supporter of WHO at all levels. We also talked about equitable regional rotation for the Director-General. Countries in every region have raised it with me. In the Eastern Mediterranean, which has never had one, it matters most. Thank you, Your Excellency, for your support and good wishes.

At #EMRC73, Member States reaffirmed that ending polio everywhere will take sustained political commitment, strong surveillance, high-quality campaigns and reaching the children who are hardest to reach. Read the latest➡️
As #EMRC73 comes to a close, one message stands out: ending polio and protecting every child from vaccine-preventable diseases will require sustained political leadership, regional solidarity and strong partnerships. Throughout the Regional Committee, Member States and partners reaffirmed their commitment to stopping poliovirus transmission, reaching children who are still being missed and building stronger, more sustainable immunization programmes. The commitments are clear. Now we must translate them into action. Read more 👇 emro.who.int/media/news/east…

What are the main resolutions to promote health for all adopted by member states at the 73 session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean #EMRC73 ? See below⬇️
Over the last 3 days, Member States came together to chart the way forward for health in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. They adopted resolutions on: 1. Advancing health financing for stronger financial protection in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: pathways to equity and resilience 2. A multi-communicable disease elimination approach for the Eastern Mediterranean Region The Regional Committee also expressed appreciation for Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for his services as Director-General of the World Health Organization. This was in recognition of his lifelong professional devotion to the cause of global health, and recalling his 10 years of dedicated service as Director-General of the Organization. These commitments will guide collective action towards stronger, more equitable and resilient health systems, so that everyone, everywhere in the Region can access the care they need. Thank you to all Member States, partners and participants for your engagement. #EMRC73 | #Partners4Health

Pleased to meet with Oman’s Minister of Health Dr. Hilal bin Ali bin Hilal Al Sabti during the #EMRC73 to share my platform for a WHO the world can count on: more trusted, impactful, and valuable. We covered two topics: access to health products, and healthy cities, where the @OmaniMOH has a lot to share with other countries. The Minister also reaffirmed the Sultanate’s continued support for a science-based WHO that draws on the experience of every region. And the importance of strengthening multilateralism where the Sultanate of Oman has played a critical role globally on the health and other agendas as well. I thanked him for his counsel and support for my campaign. شكراً جزيلاً

Grateful to meet my sister Djibouti’s Minister of Health Mouna Osman Aden during the #EMRC73. The minister spoke candidly about the pressure that migration puts on the health system, with around 10,000 people passing through the country each month. I saw this first-hand during my visit to Obock, north of Djibouti, where I met migrants and the @MinSantedj teams supporting them. We also exchanged ideas about my campaign and views on the principle of equitable regional rotation, a point I have heard from many countries during this campaign, for both the WHO Director-General and the UN Secretary-General positions. In the Eastern Mediterranean, which has never had a Director-General, the point carries particular weight for Member States. A WHO the world can count on starts with understanding better the realities and priorities countries face.

“We are the future.” That is what representatives of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) told me at #EMRC73 when I asked what they expect from the next WHO Director-General. They want young people not merely invited into the room, but genuinely involved in shaping policies and decisions. They also called for all regions to have an equal voice, and for young people to become part of countries’ formal delegations to WHO regional committees. I have long supported this approach. In the letter convening WHO/Europe’s Regional Committee, I encouraged Member States to include youth in their delegations. One of the first initiatives I launched as WHO Regional Director for Europe was #Youth4Health – to embed young people’s voices and perspectives across WHO/Europe’s work. IFMSA’s meetings ahead of the World Health Assembly already help young people build knowledge and skills. But preparation is not enough when travel costs limits who can participate. This gave me real food for thought. If we want to hear from young people in all their diversity, WHO and its Member States need to find practical ways to bring them into our discussions, regardless of their financial circumstances.

At #EMRC73 in Cairo, I met Ambassador Muhannad Al-Aklouk, Palestine’s 🇵🇸 Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States and head of delegation. Ambassador @Mohannad_Aklouk thanked European countries for supporting the medical evacuation of Palestinian patients from Gaza and greatly valued my proactive role in helping facilitate these efforts. He also welcomed my collaboration with @DrAbuelaish around the establishment of the Global Institute for the Study of Socio-endemic Diseases, Hatred, Health and Peace at @KU_Leuven. The Ambassador’s words took on added meaning today, when Armenia’s 🇦🇲 Health Minister @AnahitAvanesian informed me that three children with serious health conditions had been transferred from Gaza, through Jordan, to Armenia with their caregivers. My thanks to Armenia, Jordan, @WHO colleagues and everyone involved. This work must continue so that every patient needing treatment unavailable in Gaza can reach it, without cost or politics standing in the way.

#EMRC73 offered many opportunities to hear directly from countries and discuss the priorities in my manifesto. I met 🇪🇬 Egypt’s Acting Foreign Minister, as well as health ministers, senior officials and ambassadors from 🇮🇷 Iran, 🇯🇴 Jordan, 🇴🇲 Oman, 🇵🇰 Pakistan, 🇶🇦 Qatar, 🇸🇩 Sudan and 🇸🇾 Syria. However brief, each encounter allowed me to hear the questions that mattered most and explain what my vision for WHO would mean in practice for their countries and people. I value these brief exchanges because they test ideas against the realities countries face. I firmly believe that listening to Member States should always guide how WHO sets priorities and delivers support.

During a special update on polio eradication at #EMRC73, Dr @jGuudle, Director for Polio Eradication and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases @WHOEMRO, outlined progress and remaining challenges, followed by a discussion with Member States. Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the world's last two countries with endemic wild poliovirus, with transmission concentrated in a few high-risk areas. Circulating variant poliovirus outbreaks also continue to threaten children in Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Member States reaffirmed their commitment to ending polio, emphasizing stronger cross-border coordination, improved access to missed children, high-quality vaccination campaigns and surveillance, and integration with essential health services. The discussion underscored the importance of sustained political leadership, regional solidarity and continued support from partners to reach every child and finish the job of polio eradication. #EndPolio | #Partners4Health
