Mass Effect: Universe would have been an absolute banger — a deeply reactive, fan-first game built by a brilliant team that fans would have loved. Romain Toutain (Tech Director, Twitch: Octobinz) shared these details on stream yesterday: • Protagonist fully customizable (“the Shepard”) and able to perform the exact combat moves from the trailer in real gameplay • Game was highly stateful — tracked nearly every action and reacted accordingly (improving on Cyberpunk 2077 & BG3 systems) • Absolute player autonomy was a core pillar • All choices from Mass Effect 1–3 fully accounted for • Missions didn’t fail just because you killed someone; paths stayed open (system worked well) • No two players would have the same experience — same broad story, but lived very differently • Title “Universe” came from plugging saves together to create parallel universes / branching timelines (Zero Time-style) • Contradictory decisions could create new plot points and timeline divergences • Idea existed for sharing saves so friends could play your version of the story • Bartender in the trailer was from a brand-new race • Lore around the new Mass Relays was described as incredible • “Billy” (the hand entity in the trailer) was the internal nickname; it might have been able to generate tentacles • Trailer was genuine in-engine footage using pre-production assets and ran smoother than any prior BioWare game • Trailer was made by an external team (not an internal dev leak) for internal use only • Toutain also helped optimize Dragon Age: The Veilguard (including third act work) • Mass Effect team stayed to support DA because they believed their own project could be something special • Michael Gamble was in tears and could barely speak when announcing the closure • Seniors (including Mark Darrah) stayed to help juniors find work and took home concept art & collector items before EA could destroy them • Strong frustration: “EA never sells anything. They just shut things down and sit on their licenses” • Deep gratitude to fans — community was at the core of the project and any Mass Effect fan launching the game would have been satisfied The people at BioWare were brilliant.
