ALT MA will be welcoming and inclusive of students of color and students underrepresented in higher education. Today’s decision overturns decades of settled law. Our commitment to progress and representation in education remain unshakable. We will continue to break down barriers to higher education so that all students see themselves represented in both our public and private campus communities. MA, the home of the first public school and first university, will lead the way in championing access, equity, and inclusion in education. We want to make sure that students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first generation students, and all underrepresented in higher ed feel welcomed and valued at our colleges and universities. Today’s decision, while disappointing, will not change our commitment to these students. We have an imperative to make sure our schools reflect our communities. Our academic competitiveness, the future of our workforce, and our commitment to equity demand we take action.

ALT Today’s Supreme Court decisions on Affirmative Action in college admissions represent yet another blow to the civil rights infrastructure and the freedom to learn in this country. These decisions are a cornerstone of an effective, growing and coordinated campaign by right-wing extremists to undermine multiracial democracy. For years, Affirmative Action has been overlooked as a major civil rights issue by people who purport to be the liberal establishment while also continuing to be a key target for democracy’s opponents on the right. Why? Because the attack on Affirmative Action was the gateway into the conservatives’ overall argument positioning anti-racist ideas and actions as punitive against White Americans instead of promoting equality for all. Censorship, CRT bans, book bans, “Don’t Say Gay” laws, fake outrage at Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives — these anti-democratic assaults are all branches of the same tree, a tree whose roots are rotting.
