Wow this AO3 shutdown appears to have brought out the worst in everyone, huh?
My take: I consented to people being able to download my fics the moment I posted them on AO3. That's part of the archive, and I knew that going in.

She doxxed fanfic writers and filed so many takedowns that eventually fan fiction sites took down the entire category of her works. Her infamy is not unfounded and not based on misogyny. She genuinely hated fan works of any kind. Lol

In my undergrad thesis many many years ago, I included lurkers (folks who don't interact much, not even to leave a comment at times, but read fic or look at fanart, watch edits/fanvids, etc.) because fandom has long seen lurkers as key members of the community.
Lurkers were never seen as bad, they were just doing community quietly.
In fandom, you give what you can give and your participation or role is never something that is set in stone. You can be a lurker one day and organizing a Christmas challenge the next. You can be less active today and more in the future. And so on.
Do not let people make you believe that you have to be productive and/or visible all of the time to be seen as a "real fan".
But also, do not forget that when you're part of a community, you're not alone, and giving people small kindnesses, like liking a post or even just sending up a positive emoji when you see something you've enjoyed is part of maintaining a healthy, happy community. It does make a difference.
(That said, please don't shake people down for positive interactions. We're all humans trying to find joy on a planet in a polycrisis.)
Remember: You love the thing, you show it in your own way, and belong to a community. Do all that and treat people kindly, and that's all you need to be a fan. Do not lose the fun and whimsy!

ao3's been down for a week and yall are already falling for phishing scams. in what world would someone who only sees your public profile need your account's associated email address to take your posts off their site.

I'm an author who has several dozen fics on AO3 lmao. I've been on there for like a decade now. Reader feedback is great but nobody is entitled to it, me included, and people privately archiving my stories are not robbing me of that. Get a grip.
Replying to @doctorbaixue
NO ONE is talking about profit, authors want to >>TALK TO THEIR READERS<<about things they love. About how they view characters, about what they liked in our writing. It's literally the most human thing EVER. The way you ppl misinterprete authors as attention gluttons is PITIFUL

It is and not to defend the corporation but it should be pointed out these maintenance are understandable
2 of them were for server upgrades to allow for Cross data center pf/of
1 was for a world wide security issue that was in no way their fault but needed to be addressed

Unsurprising that nuance is dead but the website that scrapped ao3 and is trying to charge $ for fanworks is SO VASTLY DIFFERENT than fans sharing epubs and PDFs with other fans.
Acting like these are equivalent is a misrepresentation and actually not helpful.
if i see you fuckers saying people uploading fics to a gdrive folder and sharing them around is "the same/just as bad" as that ao3 dot live gen AI filled vibe-coded paywalled piece of shit website i'm going to crash out.

For me, sharing a fic from a Google Drive is like letting someone borrow a book you have on your shelf at home.
This??? This is like stealing an entire library and building your own with the books you stole. This site needs to be taken down IMMEDIATELY.

i think some of you are too young to remember the “I don’t own *original IP* or the characters. All rights belong to the creator. I gain no profit from this body of work.” disclaimer that was copy-pasted onto the start of every fanfic. bc wdym you think you “own” your fanfic 😭

this ao3 shutdown had me wondering whether some authors don’t understand the whole concept of the website? if you’re willing posting on an archive which enables users to download your work, and you have an issue with it, you should’ve chosen a different site/app instead
