Yesterday’s Binance incident is already the biggest crypto heist on record by the numbers coming out. On October 29, attackers pulled roughly $6.3 billion from Binance controlled wallets across about ten blockchains. Blockchain analysis firms say the majority of the movement happened in a window of roughly 20 minutes. Binance’s early findings pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop that gave access to a service container, from which unauthorized withdrawal transactions were submitted. They reported no evidence of wallet private keys leaking, and later said further investigation had turned up additional points of breach. Withdrawals were paused while they worked with partners; about $3 billion has been frozen on-chain so far (including large amounts of stablecoins by issuers). Binance has said it will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and company reserves and that user funds are safe. Firms including TRM Labs and Chainalysis have assessed with high confidence that North Korea’s TraderTraitor group (linked to Lazarus) is behind it. Andy, Sophie, Benny, and Riley aren’t just characters attached to a few songs, they’re the beginning of a world that can exist across music, visuals, merch, and whatever else the community ends up creating around them. The music is the entry point, not the entire product. Fans aren’t just listening or collecting; they get room to participate in the universe itself. That’s the part I’m most interested in. I’ve seen a lot of projects talk about “community” without giving people anything real to do inside the world. This feels different, there’s space for people to show up, build alongside the characters, and actually shape how the story grows over time. Different teams will approach tokenized IP in different ways, but the direction feels the same: music and characters that feel alive instead of locked inside one platform or one release cycle. I’m curious how far this actually goes from here. Tokenized IP is still early, and most of the interesting parts haven’t been figured out yet. But the idea of characters and stories that can keep expanding because people are inside the world with them is the version of onchain entertainment I’ve been waiting to see.
