the reason moby-dick remains such a vital piece of human art is that it addresses what is probably one of humanity's greatest collective atrocities, the genocide of the whales, with an ambivalence it cannot itself fully articulate. melville is distraught, but he can't explain why

The best thing about RLM is that if we found out that, say, Mike was cheating on his wife, the fandom would mostly just be shocked to find out he was married

One of the lesser nuisances of ai images is that I often use image search engines for reference when drawing, and they’re basically useless now. Just sifting through piles and piles of worthless identical crap

as annoying as watermarks can be, this is terrible news Getty was a great source of historical photography, many times, and I'm afraid that many of their photos could have been only found on their site these few photos of Black October I haven't seen anywhere besides their site

The Chuds found this so I'll point out what's blaringly obvious to anyone who loves this movie and has media literacy above that of a 12 year old. The humans and the bugs are ultimately not that different, especially by the end. Your defenses - the bugs are worse, the bugs started it - do not withstand a look at the text. The teacher at the beginning (Rue McClanahan from Golden Girls lol) expresses admiration for the bugs - they're selfless, brave, don't know about death, collectivist. Denise Richards raises a reasonable objection, that humans have created art, and she laughs at the idea. Even if the bugs sent the asteroid, the humans end up using Horten Ho 229s to bomb entire planets. Neil Patrick Harris uses the same power as the brainbug - he's psychically guiding subordinates through the tunnels. The mobile infantry loses individuation and will power and exist only to die and kill, like the soldier bugs. Then, at the end, the humans do the exact same thing the brain bug - they penetrate the brain of the brainbug with a symbolic phallus to learn how it fights to make its "race" easier to kill. The movie is not "fascism is kind of cool when it's against genocidal bugs" because the government seen here is incompetent, ideologically deranged, helped start the war. The movie is "fascists, even if they come up against literal bugs, end up transforming dumb sexy Dawson's Creek kids into bugs."
Neil Patrick Harris is the only young actor in the cast smart enough to realize this. He goes from the smartass friend in a recognizable late-90s high school sex dramedy to "what if Reinhard Heydrich was psychic?"

This aristocratic posture, depicted on the Early La Tène bronze flagon of Glauberg (left), may have persisted into the Gallo-Roman period, as evidenced by the statuette from the sanctuary of La Bauve in northern France. (right)
The Gaulish aristocrats had a habit of sitting cross-legged, in a position similar to the Padmasana posture from the Buddhist and Hindu tradition. Below: statue from the site of Roquepertuse

The talented and knowledgeable David Rickman reconstructed these warriors first attested in 1689, until the early 19thc, in a series of drawings, showing how even the legs were protected under horse armor. Not included are their thick buff coat with neckguard and helmets.
Recreation of an armored Comanche horse from 1700. Raw hide scales with sand glue on provided protection against arrows and melee weapons. It eventually fell out of favor when guns became widely available.

Something weird I realized when finishing a re-read of The Iliad. I actually believe a lot of the fight scenes. Even if they aren't all literally depictions of actual fights between Trojans and Achaeans, they're insanely detailed and believable, and the epic maintains some memory of actual bronze age weapons and armor that would have been very foreign in Homer's world. I think there's a good chance the West Anatolian bardic tradition that give rise to the epics was more likely to remember someone getting a spear in the brain or a weird big shield than, say, the existence of the Hittite Empire or that the Phrygians weren't around then.
