Cheesecake Factory populism is so weird to me because the rise of chain restaurants created over-the-top, replicable dining experiences, which eventually put the final squeeze on mom-and-pop restaurants, such as the US version of trattorias. I would argue those family-owned neighborhood businesses made the dining experience feel more special and pulled communities together. The shift to chain restaurants homogenized American life and concentrated corporate power. Strange to frame corporate consolidation as "populism."

Vivek Ramaswamy’s wife, Dr. Apoorva Ramaswamy, is a physician who teaches at Ohio State. As a physician and professor, she has a legal obligation to report to law enforcement if she is aware of a patient or student who is in an unsafe living situation of possible sexual abuse. Reporters and Ohio voters should ask her if she believes a 12 year old girl living with a step-father accused of sexual abuse should stay in the home with her abuser. How about it, Dr. Ramaswamy?

Hard to overstate how much the Amy Acton Mom ad is what the modern GOP is about. All these anxieties about how people (especially women and children) might use their agency to break bonds of filial duty and free themselves, rather than be subject to control and abuse. We sort of satirize them as the “you can’t groom my kids, that’s MY job!” Party, but this ad is very nearly that explicit argument. They don’t want schools to empower young people to find the autonomy to come out as gay or trans, they don’t want colleges to teach young adults about the breadth of the world and the human dignity of people from diverse backgrounds, they don’t want women to have financial independence and jobs and no-fault divorce. At the heart of the GOP is this very straightforward premise: “there are some people whom it is my right to abuse. They are my property, and they owe me total obedience; freeing themselves from my abuse is a betrayal of natural hierarchy and divine law. You are trying to take my victims away from me, and I’ll do anything to stop you.”
Surprised that folks think the Amy Acton mother ad will work. My immediate reaction (which i suspect will be other's) was: wait, is that her mother? Then I searched for the backstory on Acton's family. And then, well...

What's crazy is that @SarahLongwell25 spent 15 years working for the most notorious lobbyist in the country, Richard Berman; he even got a movie made about him, called "Thank You For Smoking." And she's never accounted for that. The rule-of-thumb in DC has always been that it's ok to do the most antisocial kind of lobbying -- aside from tobacco and all sorts of other clients, Berman even lobbied to push pregnant women to eat more mercury -- but if you do that, you're a little less welcome in public, polite society. You can keep all your friends and go to private parties, in other words, but you're not gonna be invited to join the Kennedy Center board. No tobacco lobbyists need apply. Yet Longwell spent the bulk of her career working for the most notorious, evil lobbyist in DC, has never explained it at all, and has just seamlessly transitioned into journalism and advocacy for Democrats. Here she is explaining how it was actually fine for Kamala Harris to not take a stand against the genocide in Gaza. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. I would QT her here but she blocked me.

Replying to @SenBlumenthal
@SenBlumenthal @HawleyMO @SenWarren @SenMarkey Dear Senators, I would like to bring your attention to an emerging consumer protection problem in the AI/SI space. What is happening is: when Americans pay for large language model inference, they are not always getting what they pay for. In the industry consumers call this "nerfing" which means that the quality goes down after a few weeks, without the company disclosing the quality drop and changes. It's like buying a ton of corn per week; the first week it is 99% corn but the second week its 20% rat droppings. Is there any consumer protection for us? Happy to discuss further with your staff
Regardless if this example is true, make no mistake: cloud models can be quietly nerfed to reclaim limited capacity and/or cut cost. The hardest changes to spot from outside are the ones that leave the model ID, tokenizer, and average benchmarks intact. - Silent routing: a slice of traffic (long prompts, hard tasks, free tiers) is sent to a smaller or older checkpoint while the response still returns under the flagship name. - Tighter quantization or kernel swaps: BF16 to FP8/INT8, or cheaper attention paths, that mostly spare easy prompts and fail on rare tokens and multi-step reasoning. - Aggressive context compression: earlier truncation, heavier prompt folding, or stricter KV-cache eviction, so the advertised window is rarely what the model actually sees. - Hidden thinking caps: shorter internal scratchpads or lower speculative-decoding acceptance, which trims hard-problem quality without changing the visible style. - Behavioral retunes: safety or brevity patches that increase hedging and shorten answers, cutting output tokens while looking like a 'personality' tweak. What are some other ways they could do it?
