Dr. Carnell and I had a wonderful meeting with Angelique Power the Skillman Foundation CEO and President. I also participated in a podcast with Angelique and Lloyd Jackson from WJR 760. It was an excellent podcast discussion with students posing questions for me.

At #MPC25, leaders are discussing where education is heading.
Education is foundational to Michigan’s economic success, but our K-12 students have fallen behind. For Michigan to be great, we must holistically transform our education system and remove roadblocks to success.

What is the best known story of Detroit and also somehow the least story of Detroit? The best known is that this is a city that MAKES things, is innovative, visionary & changes the world. The least known story is that this is exactly what is happening right now inside of our public education system. Did you know @Detroitk12 is outperforming state averages on post-pandemic improvement in Literacy and Mathematics?
Did you know @Detroitk12 offers dual-enrollment & works closely with higher ed institutions like @waynestate to ensure all high schools offer career pathways for its students?
Did you know that curriculum has been created here – by @skillmanfound Visionary Awardee Silver Moore that is now being taught in schools across the nation?
Did you know that Detroit is home to the Umoja Debate League where middle and high school students across 20 schools engage in discussions about city council ordinances?
Did you know this same Debate League is run by Jerjuan Howard along with an entire executive team wherein all are under 30?
Thank you @dethomecoming for featuring the innovation inside of our education system and especially the people who power this everyday.

Michigan can become the first state to innovate on public education making it free from Prek- 14th grade.
Read my OP-Ed in @freep on how we believe @skillmanfound that this is not only possible but a powerful leap forward.

What makes a politician attractive to @CoC_SWDetroit’s Esther Guerrero? "Someone who is with the people." Guerrero cites that she values someone who follows through with their word, listens to their community, and is present when necessary. #MPC24

During Teacher Appreciation Week, I sat alongside Ted Dintersmith from What School Could Be and @GovWhitmer for an inspiring chat about how we can equip students with the critical skills they need to succeed in school. Students are our future. These conversations are invaluable.

Your kid isn't Katniss Everdeen, so why is she being subjected to the "Hunger Games model" of education? Check out this excellent op-ed by @FundMIFuture coalition member Imani Foster and @angelique1971. It's simple: Fix (and fully fund) the damn schools! 👇
"The education equivalent to filling potholes on crumbling highways is what we’re doing now–increasing millages in suburban districts while blaming students, parents, & teachers for the results of systemic decline." OpEd by @angelique1971 and Imani Foster bit.ly/46AY5YV
