Hi everyone - like many in medical + scientific community, I stopped using this platform about 1.5 years ago as it descended into a form of engagement that didn’t align with my values. But, I have just joined the move across to BlueSky! Find me @ drskyekinder #MedTwitter

Last day of #mentalhealth rotation for these fabulous @UniMelbMDHS future doctors! It was a pleasure to return from maternity leave to teach one last rotation for the year. Thank you to @unimelb Department of Psychiatry for supporting the visibility of #motherhood. #MedTwitter

Took some soul searching to decide how best to express my opinion as someone who has seen both sides. But grateful for the opportunity to contribute 🙏
We need to improve things for young people experiencing #eatingdisorders

Pleased to write for @theMJA InSight+ alongside @Tahnee_Bridson & @PatMcGorry, drawing attention to systems failings re: #eatingdisorders. These issues are amplified for patients, carers, & doctors who are living and working in #rural. #MedTwitter insightplus.mja.com.au/2023/…

Eating disorders sit outside of the normal medical treatment model, making access to treatment and care in Australia very difficult for patients and putting additional pressure on doctors

I think anyone working with eating disorders needs to see part of their role as being an advocate or even campaigner for their patients. Too often we’re met with blame &!closed doors, so having others push for the care we need can unburden us from part of the suffering involved. – at Cambridge, England

When Channel 10 came to my home. Media skills is essential for the clinician. Our core business is education. What is important and what sells in the media may be different. Finding a way to sell what is important to the media is critical. If you can, get some media training.

If anyone is thinking of a career in healthcare, please seriously consider psychiatry. Apart from being infinitely rewarding & intellectually stimulating; it’s busy. One clinic in Melbourne w/ three psychiatrists just received 500 referrals in June. Shortage, much? #psychtwitter

I'm tired of people saying that the "children didn't see the abuse" or "they were too young to be effected" or "they were asleep." Children are harmed by perpetrators through multiple pathways. We need to end the myth of the child witness which tells us that abuse only harms children if they see or hear it. academy.safeandtogetherinsti…

The reversal of the @RANZCOeyedoctor decision to exclude trainees on parental leave is welcomed. From a culture point of view though, an event like this should always prompt an organisation to consider how the decision came to be made in the first place. 🤔 #SystemicBias
I’m delighted to report that the RANZCO President has phoned to advise @amavictoria that the RANZCO decision to exclude trainees on parental leave being able to apply for or sit exams from January 2024 has been reversed. An email notification will go out to trainees next week.

It was an enormous pleasure to be part of today’s @unimelbmdsc Panel at @marvelstadiumau with Drs Millie Baker
Lauren Downey, Edwina Goghlan & @skyekinder
talking about #ruralhealth & what we can do to fix it. Agreed communities need more say in health planning. @Mark_Butler_MP
Wonderful to join @UniMelbMDHS medical students for a 2nd day at the annual @unimelbmdsc, this time on a panel discussing #ruralhealth alongside @BurdackMark, @edwinacoghlan & Dr Lauren Downie. Thank you to medical student Millie Baker for organising. #MedStudentTwitter
Some big ticket issues raised include:
👉 Need for further development & implementation of rural specialty training programs
👉 Devastating reality that in some areas of VIC, rural medical staff are losing employment opportunities in favour of cheaper telehealth models (1/2)
👉 Potential for locums to undervalue and undermine the efforts of local rural staff
👉 Ongoing + harmful stigma and self-stigma perpetuated by rural medical bonding initiatives
👉 Disproportionate impact of poor #ruralhealth policy on rural, regional and remote women (2/2)

Replying to @skyekinder
@skyekinder encouraging medical students to get involved in #ruralhealth advocacy as we all have lived experience of being in the medical pipeline as students and deserve a voice in the policy decisions that affect us! Couldn’t say it better myself! @unimelbmdsc @ACRRM @RANZCP – at Melbourne, Victoria
A joy to present to our medical student community at annual @UniMelbMDHS MD Student Conference at Marvel Stadium, which brings together over 1,400 med students across four days. Snap 📸 w/ fellow panellists @gdtoogood & @HarrietHiscock, talking all things #mentalhealth system.
☝️ Topics included issues of equity and access, associated costs (financial and otherwise), and unintended harms. As doctors we have a responsibility to hold our systems and ourselves to account. #MedTwitter @cgdavey @LPepe2 @Maheshjayaram @bhatrey
