By every measure, Opus 4.8 beats human experts as peer reviewers in a study of 124 Harvard social science papers covering a range from statistical analyses to formal models to qualitative work. As academics, we need to figure out how to adapt the practice of science to AI, fast.

Adnan, MP from Blackburn (incidentally where I went to school) speaks alot of sense, well worth following
One of France’s most iconic historical moments is a revolution that ended with its king losing his head. Its literary heritage, from Les Misérables onwards, is steeped in revolt. Condemn violence and desecration of cultural heritage, absolutely. But selectively screengrabbing riots to frame them as immigrants versus the French, then labelling it “cultural suicide” or “Islamic”, is political opportunism. These protests involve people from different backgrounds, protesting their government and the conditions they live under. Disagree with the method all you please, however, reducing the unrest to an anti-immigrant narrative isn’t defending French culture. It’s exploiting unrest to scapegoat minorities and push an agenda, and it's hoping the people you're trying to convince are historically illiterate.

I applaud @ComAcFreedom for commissioning a genuinely independent investigation into Cambridge’s appointment of Jason Arday and the university’s subsequent handling of concerns about his scholarship, qualifications, and the direction of its own inquiry. Cambridge’s process appears to have been narrowed away from the core questions of academic merit, due diligence, and the possible role of EDI considerations. That is precisely why an external review is needed. The panel’s calibre is exceptional. Particular credit to @ProfAliceS (UCL), whose rigorous work on sex-based data and evidence has itself been a stand against ideology over reality. She is joined by @sapinker, Robert Tombs, Maurice Glasman, and chair Swaran Preet Singh (Lord Singh of Solihull), with @nickwallis, whose reporting exposed the Post Office scandal, leading the evidence-gathering. This is a serious highly qualified group committed to objective analysis rather than institutional self-protection. Truth-seeking and clarity matter. @Cambridge_Uni’s reputation has been damaged; only a full, evidence-based examination can help it begin to recover. It also sets a necessary precedent: other universities should not be able to prioritise narrative over standards and then limit scrutiny when questions arise. The involvement of people prepared to defend material reality (including on sex) against ideological pressure is welcome in both this and related fights for academic integrity. This weekend @acadofideas #BattleFest is taking up these issues directly, with sessions on Saturday including “The corruption of the university?” (Hoare Memorial Hall, 10:15) and “After Arday: is Sociology worth saving?” (Temple Room). I am looking forward to the debates @Fox_Claire. Universities exist to pursue knowledge, not to manage reputations or enforce DEI, ideology or orthodoxy. Engaging in debate about it and an independent investigation are welcome steps toward restoring that principle.
🚨BREAKING: CAF has commissioned an independent investigation into Cambridge’s appointment of Dr Jason Arday as its youngest ever black professor, amid growing professional disquiet over his academic record, the circumstances of his appointment, the University’s handling of concerns raised about his scholarship and, more recently, the scope and direction of Cambridge’s own inquiry. You can find out more here: ardayinvestigation.net/ The investigation will be chaired by Professor Swaran Preet Singh, Lord Singh of Solihull, a former Commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights Commission who previously led the independent investigation into allegations of discrimination within the Conservative Party. He will be joined by a distinguished panel comprising Harvard psychologist Professor Steven Pinker, UCL sociologist Professor Alice Sullivan, Cambridge historian Professor Robert Tombs and Labour peer Professor Maurice Glasman. Award-winning investigative journalist Nick Wallis, whose work helped expose the Post Office Horizon scandal, will lead the investigation with a dedicated research team. CAF has been contacted by numerous Cambridge academics who are deeply concerned that the University’s own investigation will fail to confront the wider institutional culture in which the Arday affair unfolded. Whether these concerns are justified is for the independent investigation to determine. But Cambridge is one of the world’s oldest and greatest universities, and what happens to its academic culture has implications for higher education as a whole. So we think it’s worth going the extra mile to make sure the right questions are asked and the right lessons learned. CAF strongly encourages current and former academics, students and other members of the University community, as well as others with relevant knowledge, to come forward with information. This might include policy documents, internal correspondence or first-hand accounts concerning Arday’s academic record and appointment, the University’s response to concerns about his scholarship and its treatment of those who raised them, and the operation of institutional policies relating to recruitment, promotion, academic misconduct, research integrity and EDI. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact the Investigator directly at: [email protected] The investigation website provides further guidance on submitting information, including arrangements for particularly sensitive material: ardayinvestigation.net/

I get loads of emails and prose which has used AI and it doesn’t bother me at all - make the same judgements of the asks, the questions, the ideas expressed, how I can respond. Like many others I’m slow to write and never thought I was good at it. Key is to be responsible.
