𝗦𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹 🇵🇸 🇿🇦

Everything is written in books… except peace in Palestine. We are still waiting for the day when we can finally write its story.. We open history books and read about Palestine, about its land that was taken away, about the Nakba of 1948, about the hundreds of villages whose people were forcibly displaced, and about the Israeli occupation that extended to the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967. Then we turn the pages and find names that resemble unhealed wounds more than the names of cities and villages: The Balad al-Sheikh massacre in 1947; Deir Yassin, Tantura, Lydda, Al-Dawayima, and Safsaf in 1948; Qibya in 1953; Kafr Qasim, Khan Younis, and Rafah in 1956; Sabra and Shatila in 1982; the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre in 1994; Qana in 1996; Jenin in 2002; and Beit Hanoun in 2006, when the Beit Hanoun massacre struck my own family. My aunts, uncles, and cousins were killed while they were sleeping in their beds… Then we read about the wars in Gaza in 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2021. And every time we believe we have reached the final page of the tragedy, history opens another page filled with blood and suffering. Then came the war in Gaza in 2023, adding more chapters to history books—chapters of killing, destruction, hunger, displacement, and the loss of loved ones. And today, I am not reading about this tragedy in a book… I am living it. I am writing from inside my tent, after losing my home, being displaced with my family countless times, and watching my children grow up surrounded by fear, hunger, and deprivation. Then I open another book titled “Human Rights”… I read that every human being has the right to life, freedom, safety, food, education, housing, and dignity. I stop at these words for a long time and ask myself: Why do we memorize human rights at school, only to spend our entire lives in Palestine struggling to obtain even the most basic of these rights? And what will future generations write about us? Will they read the names of new massacres? Will they memorize the numbers of victims? Will they see pictures of our children beneath the rubble, just as we saw pictures of those who came before us? Or will a day finally come when a Palestinian child opens a history book and reads an entirely different chapter? A chapter titled: “The occupation ended… Palestine became free again, and its children finally lived in peace and safety.” We are tired of being victims in history books. We are tired of having our stories written in tears, of seeing our homes reduced to photographs of rubble, and our names turned into numbers. I want to live to see the day when I can write about Palestine without mentioning a massacre, a war, or displacement. I want to write about its schools and universities, about its laughing children, about its streets full of life, and about the sea of Gaza, which is no longer a witness to our sorrows. When will we finally close the book of tragedies and open the first page of a book titled “Free Palestine”? 🇵🇸💔
