ALT Soap Ear is back with an open call pitches for our early autumn return issue ! We’re still the same online publication dedicated to topics on sound, hearing, listening, music, culture, art, theory, and practice. Instead of posing an explicit theme for this issue, we’re keeping this call open and want to hear what you’ve been thinking about recently. Our editorial remains dedicated as always to holding space for long-form, all-out, far-flung, disregulated, honed-in, or otherwise passionate critical and creative projects that draw out the critique, resistance, counter/de/recontextualizing and possibility brought forth in sound, music, performance, and writing. Past writers have found as much insight in a single Britney song as they have in the fragmentary history of hardcore music and the sono-environmental politics of gentrification around the Olympics

ALT We’re not necessarily academic though and we don’t have requirements for your byline. We can host sound, video, image, and writing-based projects on our Wordpress and we offer an honorarium of $100 for each piece that we publish. Please send a email to [email protected] by July 15th with a brief description of your proposed piece.

ALT What characteristics does the stable thing hold? In the world of sound, we might consider stable rhythm and pulse, stable intervals and harmony, stable textures, formal stability, or stable communities. What are the pasts, presents, and futures of these qualities?

ALT For this issue, we welcome articles, mixtapes, sound essays, or anything else you can conceive of that explores the concept of stability. Our focus is on music, sound, and performance, but we are open to work that considers other mediums or fields. We pay $50 per article and accept pitches at [email protected] ... Please submit by March 12th!

ALT an art sculpture by Catalina Ouyang depicting a brutally injured person laying down with their head hanging over a well as a figure leans over them holding a hand on their throat and scissors near their eyes. the kneeling figure has pale yellow skin, large breasts with horns replacing its nipples, a red face with four evenly spaced ears, and a large mammal skull on its head.

ALT As the stifling atmosphere of white supremacy and its incessant abuses attempts to expand by the day, these questions have taken on a new tenor. For this issue, Soap Ear will consider a theme that motivates us: time as a medium, context, and productive constraint. How do we find value in slowness when our own survival insists that may not be an option, when it feels that the present is all we have.

ALT For this issue, we welcome articles, mixtapes, sound essays, or anything else you can conceive of that explores such competing speeds of change. Our focus is on music, sound, and performance, but we are open to work that considers other mediums. We pay $50 per article and accept pitches at [email protected] ... Please submit by 9/18!
