Very happy about our super-fast JAX simulator for optics, with an application in automated discovery of new microscopes.
Spearheaded by @carlardrguez96 , with @soerenarlt and our domain expert @LMoeckl . Fantastic collaboration made possible by the @MPI_Light environment!
When I saw this enormous speed-up (5 orders of magnitude), i knew this is the way to go for all sort of AI-discovered physics experiments. It impacted strongly the ideas in my @ERC_Research Starting Grant, where we will expand this idea to many other domains.
Happy to see our work in its published version at @NatureComms !
We developed an AI framework that autonomously discovers new experimental designs in super-resolution microscopy 🔬🤖✨

I am in Vienna this week at ICML to present our work (@HaonanDuan , Felix Li, @sangmichaelxie, @Yuhu_ai_ & @MarioKrenn6240) at the AI4Science workshop.
DM me if you want to meet!
After 3 years, FINALLY out 🥳
Meta-Designing Quantum Experiments with Language Models
by @soerenarlt, Haonan Duan, Felix Li, @sangmichaelxie & @Yuhu_ai_
[paper] arxiv.org/abs/2406.02470
A transformer writes Python to solve classes of quantum design questions simultaneously.
Method:
Trained on synthetic data of pairs of (quantum state sequence, python code for their generation), the model learns automatically to build generalizations.
Exciting Results:
- Correct generalisations for two classes of entanglement structures, for which previously no generalisation was known!
- Unexpected generalisations for another set of six quantum systems, that fit our expectations for small cases, but not for large ones. Interesting new physical entanglement structures? Never investigated by humans
Final Thoughts:
Both the machine and the human researchers can read and write Python. It's an ideal way to communicate complex scientific ideas, we were basically immediately able to understand the underlying tricks and ideas used by the machine. I bet this will be applicable to many other questions in physics too!

really cool application of large language models for translating natural language mathematics into formal proof language - teaching machines to prove theorems!
After showing a few examples, large language models can translate natural language mathematical statements into formal specifications.
We autoformalize 4K theorems as new data to train our neural theorem prover, achieving SOTA on miniF2F!

Seeing that this is the best way we know to fit this many equal squares inside a square makes me feel a bit better about struggling to fit the plates in the dishwasher!
I'm starting my PhD with @MarioKrenn6240 at @MPI_Light tomorrow. Excited for the future!
