Going for a walk in India often feels like a video game.
On the footpath you're dodging:
- Holes
- Hoardings
- Construction
- Electrical boxes
And when you finally give up and hit the road you're brushing shoulders with autos, wrong-side drivers, buses and water tankers.
Looking forward to co-hosting this IDEA session. We hope to have an engaging discussion on writing papers and navigating the publication process. If you are interested in joining, please register and share a question you would like the editors to address.

Roads used to suck. Then Google Maps happened.
Trains still suck.
So I built Google Maps for trains. 🚆

Every three years the OECD, a club of mostly rich countries, releases the results of international school tests sat by 15-year-olds all across the world. Anyone who cares about the young of today should be alarmed at this year’s scores bit.ly/4zXPj6g

When they want to beat up and drag students on the streets, it takes Modi and Amit Shah’s police two seconds flat thousands of cops were deployed instantly with lathis, water cannons, tear gas and pallet guns ready.
But when 40 or 50 kids are trapped under tons of broken concrete, fallen pillars, and debris at South Campus?
Not a single cop was on site. A single JCB took over 2 to 3 hours just to show up,
while NSUI President and volunteers were literally digging through broken concrete with their bare hands to pull students out alive.
And after all the damage was done, Rekha Gupta ji arrives with her massive lashkar and heavy security cover just to inspect the site for photo ops.
Who is answerable for this tragedy?
It is YOU who is answerable. It is your administration that enables illegal structural modifications, turns a blind eye to unchecked building safety violations in student hubs like Satya Niketan, and protects the PG mafia running these death traps.

Dear followers,
I’m delighted to share this article which is finally forthcoming. We show that business school education is associated with managers paying lower wages, holding the labor share down and not sharing, revenues and profits with workers.
Forthcoming in the AER: "Eclipse of Rent-Sharing: The Effects of Managers’ Business Education on Wages and the Labor Share in the US and Denmark" by Daron Acemoglu, Alex Xi He, and Daniel le Maire. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.12…

Our paper is out! :) We argue for a new approach to econometrics that takes into account how humans add bias (selection on significance or sign) and uncertainty (multiple reasonable design choices) in econometrics. But today I want to talk about FRAUD. 1/

Dear followers
This is a truly brilliant article by Henry Farrell. Not because it defends me against the Economist (I have moved on). It’s the way Farrell frames and analyzes the issues surrounding technooptimism and AI. The Acemoglu Wars Are All About AI. programmablemutter.com/p/the…

Alberto Barbera, the President of the Venice Festival, said that the premire of "Under the Skin" (2013) was one of the worst screenings he had ever attended. According to him, Scarlett Johansson was almost in tears because of the audience's response & it was the only time the audience booed a film. Barbera then tried to console her by saying, "Don’t worry, in time the film will be recognised." He later said, "And that’s exactly what happened. It’s now a cult movie.” "Under the Skin" (2013) was named as 'The Best British film of the 21st century' in a poll of critics.
("‘We knew we would face insults’: Venice film festival’s Alberto Barbera on including Polanski and Allen", Nadia Khomami, The Guardian, 2023)
P.S: On this day, 13 years ago, "Under the Skin" (2013) premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, USA.
This CGD article is fascinating, not least for the way it is written. Sometimes social media interactions do resurface gems from the past!
Replying to @soumitrashukla9
Sandwiches from the latter have fed many cohorts of dev econ students in Oxford!
And formed the backdrop for one of my favourite pieces by @JustinSandefur @m_clem (taking down a truly terrible book by someone we both knew and had been taught by!)

Myth: “Colleges should teach AI because industry wants AI skills”
1. You can acquire AI-use skills almost overnight. Install Codex, start talking, you catch up fast
2. College class aren’t nimble. “Relevant AI skills” change too fast—AI skill classes will be obsolete fast

A 🧵on India vs China in indigenizing Science.
Science is first-order for development. Both India and China have produced large numbers of high-quality STEM Phds in the U.S.
But there's a big gap in *indigenizing* science back home ...
