Writing yet another grant and feeling it. Since asst prof job in late 2021 have senior-author papers in Science, Nat Commun (×2), Sci Adv and NAR, plus 2 more in review/revision. Still no R01. Still no prospect for promotion :_( Yet, I got invited to speak at over 10 conferences this year so thank you those who appreciate our science!

Solve For... Soggy Sauerkraut! Check out the new episode, led by @ByKateMorgan, Investigative Journalist. Kate spoke to me about my research on broccoli sprouts, as well as Don Huber and Nadine Clopton, to explore microbes in food, environments, and us! open.spotify.com/episode/0r0…

Excited and grateful to receive my first NIH funding as a PI. A big thank you to @KUcancercenter @KUMCCancerBio @KUMedCenter, our collaborators, and the amazing #PyaramLab team.
Congratulations @KUMCCancerBio Assistant Professor Kalyani Pyaram, PhD, (@ImmunolKalyani) on the recent NIH/NCI R21 grant for her project, "Role of T-cell-intrinsic Nrf2 and its Targetability in Muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer." Could inhibiting the antioxidant system within T-cells strengthen anti-tumor immunity? Looking forward to seeing the results.

What a gorgeous day to tour the animal and vegetable operations at College of the Atlantic!! The animals were adorable, the salad scapes to die for, and everyone welcoming. I enjoyed learning about their program, and brainstorming ways to bolster agriculture education in Maine.

Thanks to Happiest Health & Dr. C. Kaur for this wonderful commentary on our Microbiome study!
The gut bacterium E. rectale makes its own antioxidant, glutathione, which helps damaged intestinal tissue recover from oxidative stress!

Ok let me explain how cool this is from my perspective , please RT! I developed one of the first methods to probe RNA structure in high throughput inside living cells, and it takes tons of time and $$ to apply on thousands of viruses - it’s practically impossible. This ML approach is just as good and works in seconds for nearly free ! Not only that, it highlights the MOST IMPORTANT structures that track with function. It’s the future of RNA strucute prediction and discovery across all families 🔥 biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

It's playlist time! The 100+ students in my AVS 254 Animal Microbiomes class at UMaine have put together 3 playlists to describe the most common ways we think about microbes: friends, foes, or faraway travellers. Check them out:

There is nothing like being in a gorgeous ecosystem for inspiring conservation to protect it! I attended ISME20 in Auckland last week to talk about microbes in conservation, it was amazing!
