Thank you @SfNJournals for featuring my work doi.org/10.1523/JNEUROSCI.22… on understanding calcium regulation of neurotransmitter release.
How many calcium channels open when an action potential reaches a presynaptic terminal? This Week @SfNJournals, @sramac2 &al show that at a spinal cord synapse, the mean # is 4. But opening even 1 channel can allow vesicle fusion.

I am delighted to share work from my PhD days @thisisUIC recently published in Journal of Neuroscience @SfNJournals addressing presynaptic calcium requirements for neurotransmitter release
#JNeurosci: Ramachandran et al @thisisUIC demonstrate how neuron activation elicits calcium influx through just one calcium channel, closely associated to the synaptic vesicle and this is sufficient to trigger neurotransmitter release. jneurosci.org/lookup/DOI/10.…
