Hi
Not every galaxy follows the blueprint. NGC 4725 is a rare "one-armed" barred spiral galaxy wrapped in a ring of star formation. Studying unusual galaxies like this one helps scientists understand how the gravity from a passing galaxy can trigger bursts of star formation.

James Webb Spots the Universe’s First Lights: A Pristine Galaxy Named Hebe Roughly 440 million years after the Big Bang, when the cosmos was still a dark, quiet place of pure hydrogen and helium, a small galaxy called **Hebe** flickered into existence. Now the James Webb Space Telescope has caught its chemical fingerprint — and it may be one of the strongest clues yet that we’ve found the long-sought **Population III stars**, the very first generation of stars in the universe. A Chemical Time Capsule Using Webb’s NIRSpec spectrograph, astronomers examined Hebe, which sits only about three kiloparsecs from the famous early galaxy GN-z11. What they saw was striking: bright glowing lines of ionized helium and hydrogen, but almost no neon or oxygen — the “metals” that later stars forge in their cores and scatter when they die. This purity matches the expected signature of Population III stars. These hypothetical giants formed from the Big Bang’s original gas, never polluted by previous stellar generations. Models suggest they were monsters — often more than 100 times the mass of the Sun — burning ferociously hot and bright for only a few million years before exploding or collapsing. Ruling Out the Impostors The team carefully checked other explanations. The spectrum doesn’t match Wolf-Rayet stars (those show broad helium lines that are missing here). It doesn’t look like a small black hole quietly devouring gas. And radiation from the supermassive black hole in nearby GN-z11 can’t account for the helium glow — Hebe is simply too far away. That leaves the Population III hypothesis as the best fit so far. The chemical makeup is consistent with the idea that Hebe hosts Population III stars. Not Quite a Smoking Gun — Yet The scientists are careful: this is not yet a direct detection of individual first stars. Webb sees only the combined light of the region, and a few exotic black-hole scenarios can’t be fully ruled out. The gas might also be slightly enriched by even earlier, unseen explosions. Still, the combination of brilliant helium + pure hydrogen with no detectable metals makes Hebe one of the most convincing Population III candidates discovered to date. In short, Webb may have just shown us the cosmic dawn’s first fireflies — the stars that switched on the lights of the universe and began seeding it with the heavier elements that would eventually form planets, and us.

A 72-year-old woman hit a $2.55 MILLION jackpot on a slot machine at an Atlantic City casino. Other players celebrated and called her a millionaire. Then security arrived, the machine displayed an error message, and the casino offered her $350 instead. – Roney Beal was a regular casino visitor from Shamong Township, New Jersey. – On February 25, 2024, she visited Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City and started playing a Wheel of Fortune slot machine. – She had already put hundreds of dollars into the machine. – Suddenly, the machine announced that she was a winner. Gold coins appeared on the screen. – The jackpot showed more than $1.27 MILLION. – But she had also hit a 2x multiplier, which brought the total to $2,555,908.70. – Another player standing nearby celebrated and told her she was a millionaire. – Beal was excited. She believed she had just won the money that could change her life. – She pressed the service button to call an attendant. – That’s when things changed. – Security personnel arrived, and the machine displayed a message reading “REEL TILT.” – Casino employees told her the machine had malfunctioned and that she had not actually won the jackpot. – An attendant then opened the machine, pushed several buttons and spun the reels again. – Beal objected to what the employee was doing. She later accused casino staff of interfering with the machine before anyone else could independently inspect it. – The casino eventually told her that her actual winnings were only around $350. – She refused to accept that as the answer and hired attorney Michael DiCroce. – Beal filed a lawsuit against Bally’s and the slot machine manufacturer, International Game Technology, seeking the jackpot she believed she had won. – Her lawyer argued that the casino should preserve the machine and its surveillance footage so independent experts could investigate what happened. – Bally’s referred questions to IGT, while IGT said it was cooperating with the investigation. – In August 2025, a federal judge ordered the lawsuit to be put on hold while New Jersey gaming regulators completed their investigation. – The judge did NOT rule that Beal had lost her case. The lawsuit was administratively terminated, not dismissed. Roney Beal went to a casino, watched a slot machine announce a $2.55 MILLION jackpot, celebrated with other players, and then watched the casino turn around and tell her she had won just $350.
