In a move to "maximize efficiency," the Trump administration canceled $1 billion in education research contracts. @stats_tipton and her colleagues argue that without this research, policymakers won’t know what works—ultimately reducing efficiency. spr.ly/6013Ljvz9

I've advised students struggling with this. The easy answer - videos, workshops - don't provide deep knowledge. The harder answer - courses - often require foundational courses that are not immediately applicable.

The same problem occurs in medicine and public health - but the answer there is to have collaborative teams with biostatisticians on every paper.

Let’s be real. This is an extension of what happened to me at UNC, and it is a glimpse into the future to come. Academic freedom is under attack. Racial justice programs are under attack. Black women will be made to pay. Our so-called allies too often lack any real courage.

Our words matter. It affects how we talk about our communities - the words create power and hierarchy - eg “at risk youth” - and they don’t serve the work. We have to challenge the canon. @NYhoyagirl91

This session reminds me our recommendation in the @NASEM_DBASSE report on the future of education research - that research should be rooted in the needs of schools and communities.

Relationships should be built around the types of questions you and the community care about, not the topic. … We really have to work hard to not just look for ways to not just be opportunistic but to really answer their questions. @ahnjune

As researchers how do we find our questions? … in the partnership work, it starts with a lot of listening to understand. …This is a paradigm shift because we usually start with what can be funded. @drcallie_tweets

Equity is at the systems level and has to do with addressing historical exclusion and injustice. How do we resolve the tension between equity as a systems goal and our measures of individual students? - Rekha Balu #SREE2023

You need to define what you mean by equity. It does not on its own mean anything without being more specific - Lashawn Richburg-Hayes

Throughout we provide examples (e.g., related to the WWC) and we call upon literatures in human-computer interaction, data visualization, and the teaching of statistics literatures.

We end with a call to integrate research across these three domains - and to move questions of KM into an area of research on its own, instead of treating it as one of dissemination.

(Also, I should say that nothing makes me more nervous than accurately explaining an intervention ... so hopefully I didn't mess this up 🫣)

2) Meta-analyses should include all the relevant within-study variation in effect sizes. There is no need to average effect sizes to the study level. Doing so excludes an important source of variation. MA2 includes all relevant effect sizes. MA1 does not.

For those that are still reading: Be like MA2. If you’re going to conduct a large MA, with a lot of “heterogeneity in”, then it is your job to try to understand the “heterogeneity out.”

And please, can we stop with the “either/or”, “good/bad”, “yes/no” thinking about interventions? I’m tired of writing commentaries.
