IMO: it's always been a Sora/Riku and Sora/Kairi love triangle. KH4 might make it more obvious. I think they're always going to be in a love triangle limbo though. That's their thing.
I find it very interesting how people are willing to concede Riku has romantic feelings for Sora but not the other way around. I think Sora does and it shows in his behavior and actions. He just doesn't realize it yet.
Replying to @ikkuart
In KH2, he imagines dancing with Kairi due to how much he misses her. Honestly, everything he’s done has been for her throughout each game. Riku definitely has romantic feelings for Sora, but it’s a one sided situation unfortunately. Though, just have fun with Soriku!
Terra and Riku hide their relationship at first because they don't want people to get the wrong idea except Riku's a shithead and is always touching him and pushing his hair back and giving him really intimate hugs and eventually everyone's like 👀 what's going on
“Canon” is doing a LOT of heavy lifting in these assertions about love interests.
I wanna know what the criteria is for establishing one. Are romantic implications, narrative framing, and other charas’ assumptions enough? And if so, are we applying those standards consistently?

it always fucks me up that if you wanna rp out a more down to earth character, the murder cult is pretty chill all things considered meanwhile a bunch of pickpockets living in the sewer and a widely beloved honorable order of warriors both make you sign your soul off to a daedra
