The Original Pantry situation is messy and political, but I gotta give thanks to anyone investing in historic DTLA gems like the Pantry, Clifton’s and Cole’s. Great to see all three resuscitated. Now we need the city and fellow Angelenos to support!

“Let me die,” American photojournalist Heidi Levine repeats to journalists Jasper Nathaniel as they try to outrun masked Israeli settlers who attacked her on Friday while she covered the olive harvest in the West Bank village of Abu Falah, near Ramallah.
Around 80 settlers attacked Palestinian olive harvesters in the village, AP reported. The Palestinian Red Crescent said it treated six people injured in two attacks in Abu Falah.
Levine, a freelancer for the Washington Post, told the Committee to Protect Journalists that the settlers knocked her down and kicked her for at least 10 minutes, even after she identified herself as an American journalist. They stole her camera, phone and bag. She was eventually taken to a hospital in Ramallah.
"The IDF provided cover, with tear gas and machine guns, while the settlers beat" Levine "nearly to death," Nathaniel wrote, adding that soldiers then shot a Palestinian bystander and aimed their guns at and shoved paramedics trying to treat him. AP photos and circulating videos show Israeli soldiers standing over a wounded Palestinian man after they shot him.
Andrey X, an activist also at the scene, said a Palestinian man "saved our lives from the settler-terrorists who attacked the olive harvesters and journalists” armed only with a slingshot.

Crazy news out of the LA mayors race where the dead are rising from
the grave to signelection paperwork to help Mayor Karen Bass:
“Last month, LAPMA made its biggest single political contribution ever: donating $100,000 to a political action committee sponsored by the LAPD officers’ union, which also opposes Raman...
In keeping with California election laws, LAPMA promptly disclosed the $100,000 contribution in a filing to the Secretary of State. But there was a problem: The person who signed the paperwork, David Lara, has been dead since 2024, following complications from esophageal cancer.”

Mourning the loss of this incredible landmark. It only ever took you 5 minutes to get through security, the food options were abysmal and it had the general aura of an infrequently attended bus depot. I will miss it every day.

in the increasingly claustrophobic sphere of long-form prose, it can seem like people might only be boosting writing bc they’re friends, or to “network.” So let me say Idk his guy, nor do I want something from him. I just think he’s one of the great living American writers

This is only part of why you should be reading and listening to @Lucas_Shaw if you want to have any real understanding of how media functions today.
“It is, in many ways, a harsh reality.” Dana Walden, Walt Disney president and its first chief creative officer, discusses the company’s years of restructuring and layoffs, saying Disney isn’t looking to be at the “tip of the spear” on further cuts.
