🚨 Why are students getting worse at math?
CBC has just released an excellent audio documentary on math. It looks at declining math scores, problems with education research, and what needs to change with the way math is taught.
Please listen and share. Let’s fix math.

What are the most effective methods of improving student achievement? An NYT investigation.
For me, the data point in the bottom left quadrant is absolutely critical to understanding why student achievement goes wrong so often: teachers making up their own curriculum.

Feeling frustrated that your students can read words but not spell them? Or unsure how to integrate spelling into your daily literacy block?
Check out my latest #SORShowAndTell video! I use SOS spelling to teach my students how to spell words! Focusing on the phonemes in words and mapping the grapheme to its phoneme is a more effective way to teach spelling than memorizing lists of whole words.
This is the video I used last week with @MrZachG and @sstollar6; we dissected the lesson and described the importance of explicit instruction AND modelling, with gradual release of responsibility to build students’ independent spelling skills and confidence! ❤️

Fascinating tension between nature and nurture.
Whatever a child’s nature is like, you have to brave as if all that matters is nurture.
