Hundreds of tires are stuck in the Ohio River mud on the 2 mile section I cleanup because boat clubs use old tires on the side of their docks. They either fall off eventually, or docks get damaged during floods & the tires become part of the river as a result.
Tires are extremely toxic, surely boat owners & clubs can use something less environmentally destructive than tires on the side of their docks?

71 pounds of trash paddled out of the Ohio River today, 3 bags & 95 plastic bottles removed + the sign, a large crate, box of Tidy Cats & part of a pipe.
I'd cleaned up this same section twice already this summer, it doesn't take long for new trash to fill back in. – at Pittsburgh, PA

23,000 plastic bottles & 825 bags of trash removed from Pittsburgh's Ohio River in the past 4+ years.
Generally in life you get what you pay for. This river is evidence of a serious lack of investment. Until our government prioritizes & attacks our littering epidemic, this will never change.
My recommendations...
Step 1: Install trash barriers/OceanCleanup style interceptors in this river to catch & corral some of the the mess & mitigate the disaster.
Step 2: Implement a sustained Anti-Litter advertising campaign thru various channels(social media, TV, billboards, etc) to change minds & habits.
