Thanks to everyone who shared this. Sadly, to love the Philippines is to have your heart broken many times in many ways. Those We Lost has a new project with the wives and mothers of EJK victims. Please watch out for an update.
‘17 IS A DANGEROUS AGE TO BE IN A DANGEROUS COUNTRY’ In a social media post, artist and Rappler+ member Joy Watford (@subversive_ube) remembers Kian delos Santos, Joshua Laxamana, and Jemboy Baltazar, all 17-year-old boys who were killed in separate incidents by the police.

Oh it’s absolutely a public-interest story now, Adam. Your profession saw to that. But you don’t get to demand a fucking panoramic lens for Jason Arday and Cambridge, then suddenly switch to portrait mode when the camera reaches Fleet Street. If we’re examining Arday’s alleged bullshit, the institutions that promoted him and the people who enabled it, then congratulations: the story also includes the journalists who hounded him, the culture-war entrepreneurs who milked him for content, the editors who kept the conveyor belt moving and the newspapers that helped turn one academic scandal into a national feeding frenzy. You lot spent weeks asking WHO ENABLED JASON ARDAY? Fine. Now we get to ask WHO ENABLED YOU? How were these narratives selected, amplified and monetised? Who decided another former student, another anecdote, another humiliation was “in the public interest”? What role did ideological networks play? What responsibility does a newspaper have once it stops merely reporting a spectacle and starts helping manufacture one? Funny how “public interest” apparently covers every fucking molecule of Jason Arday’s existence but becomes terribly delicate the moment journalists themselves enter the frame. Leveson 2 is so overdue it should arrive carrying fucking archaeology equipment.
Painful - but IMHO this is a relevant first hand account of JA as academic. This should not be reduced to an attack on an MSM « pile on ». It is a public interest story. It is sad but blame lies with JA and the academic institutions which promoted him and failed in their duty of care to him.

In 2014 we published the first large-scale study of suicidality in autism, subsequently widely replicated, revealing that 1 in 4 autistic people have planned or attempted suicide. That’s why I’m very concerned about the impact of the media coverage on Professor Jason Arday who is autistic. He has been accused of plagiarism and he was cleared of any academic misconduct following a rigorous investigation by Liverpool John Moores University. And yet he continues to be systematically discredited over every detail of his life, daily. We should of course always investigate plagiarism to protect academic standards. However, I cannot stand by and watch when an autistic man is on the ground and the kicking continues. This is relentless bullying of a vulnerable autistic man and raises safe-guarding issues. It’s time to stop.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Despite university clearance, Arday's PhD thesis contains dozens of near-verbatim unattributed passages from prior works, and a journal corrected his paper for missing citations to adapted text including participant quotes. retractionwatch.com/2026/07/27/cam… mdpi.com/2076-0760/12/1…

On Al Jazeera. The Epstein scandal continues to reverberate globally. Emails released by the US Department of Justice, and as first reported by The Philippine Star, show the convicted sex offender hired a team in the Philippines to scrub online search results linked to his criminal record. The revelations have thrown a spotlight on the country’s so-called online trolls – and their growing influence.

🟥 “Silence is the language of the oppressor.” 🔳Sudanese journalist Naji-Al Kurshabi breaks down mid-interview, saying he wishes he could write the stories instead of speak them because the pain of saying them aloud is unbearable. 🔳What’s happening in Sudan is not distant. It’s the same story as Gaza, as Syria the world watching while entire families are starved into silence and cities reduced to ash. Oppression has no borders. No colour. No excuse. If you care about justice in Gaza, you must care about Sudan too. 🔴Watch this man’s voice crack then ask yourself why those responsible are still met with handshakes, not handcuffs. @MENAUncensored @waladkosti

Horrible news from where I used to live. There's about a 15-minute distance between Peterborough, where the attack started, and Huntingdon, where the train stopped. I can't bear to think the terror everyone on that train felt in each of those 15 minutes. theguardian.com/uk-news/2025…

It’s because families in Gaza have been torn apart or completely wiped out by Israel. No family has been spared—everyone has lost someone.
Why does Israel have “families” but Gaza just have “people”?

In spirit with those protesting today. May this be the spark that brings about real change in the Philippines, where the corrupt are penalised not just through legal prosecution but by election loss as well.

Strange how the people shouting about cancel culture and freedom of speech don’t seem to be making a peep when TV shows that criticise Trump are actually cancelled. Maybe those people were just bigots who wanted to make racial slurs and joke about minorities all along, who knew!

Horrific terrorism. Israel has just bombed a family that were evacuating Gaza City. They were walking close to al-Shifa Hospital when they were slaughtered by Israel. TEN individuals were slaughtered. This is a developing story.
