🇮🇱 Israel just held an election and nobody won...
I sat down with Miko Peled, the grandson of one of Israel’s 1948 signatories, to discuss what happened.
Netanyahu took the most seats, but is 7-8 short of a majority. He can bribe defectors with ministry seats, or accept a national "unity government" with rival Eisenkot.
Arab parties just won an unprecedented 18 seats in the Knesset, and neither side will go near them...
Netanyahu’s first move after the results came in was to call them a fifth column and Hamas sympathizers, just to make sure no one gets any ideas.
“He’s either going to get defectors to join him, for the good of the nation, of course.
Or they will have a national unity government, also for the good of the nation.”
However it shakes out, the change Israelis, Gazans, and the world were hoping for seems much less likely now.

Michael Pollan reveals how the introduction of caffeine completely changed human history and consciousness.
"Before caffeine, it was a very different world and a very different consciousness. People were drunk a lot of the time, buzzed almost all of the time because it was safer than water"
"Water was really how you got diseases. If you fermented things, even low alcohol, it killed a lot of the microbes. So people, even kids, drank hard cider for breakfast"
"Tea, chocolate, and coffee all arrive in the same decade in England, and things start to change... no one ate or drank boiling water or hot beverages before"
"Boiling it made it much safer. This gave this incredible public health boost to these places, and then you have the drug that fosters a kind of more linear, rational, focused way of thinking"
"People in the 1600s started writing about it saying, 'Wow, we have this new civil and sober drink that we can use.' And that, I think, makes possible things like the Industrial Revolution"
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The clip repeats the myth that pre-caffeine people were mostly drunk because water was unsafe. Historians and medieval sources show water was commonly drunk from wells/springs while weak ale provided nutrition/calories, not a substitute for bad water.

More than six centuries after her trafic death, Joan remains a symbol of courage and love for one’s country.
She reminds us that even when everything seems lost, a single person driven by faith and determination can awaken an entire nation.

This is a very significant story, but there is a lot we still don't know about what is motivating Liberman, who is the most unpredictable Israeli politician of all. Here is what we do know:
1) Since election day, Liberman has stopped answering calls from Gadi Eisenkot and Naftali Bennett. Only campaign staff are still in touch.
2) He has refused a minority government in writing. In August he posted: “Yisrael Beytenu will not be a partner in any constellation for a minority government. Period.” In October he said he would not back one even as a transitional government.
3) If anyone from the bloc joins Netanyahu, Liberman wants it to be Eisenkot, according to Channel 12. He expects Eisenkot to face pressure to join a unity government, and he wants Eisenkot to make that move, not himself.
4) He has already set this up. In October he accused Eisenkot of secretly planning a government with Netanyahu and called him “Gantz 2.”
Eisenkot has ruled out serving in a government led by Netanyahu.
5) Liberman has also written off the opposition’s fallback plan. He sees no practical way to replace Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana. Without the Speaker, the opposition cannot control the Knesset agenda or pass laws against Netanyahu without forming a government.
6) People around him expect a security escalation to complicate the political picture. He is waiting rather than committing. The war in Iran could give him the excuse he seems to be looking for.
7) His 7 seats decide the arithmetic. With 84.4% counted, Netanyahu’s bloc has 54. Liberman voting against alongside it makes 61, enough to bring down any minority government on its own.
Without Liberman, the opposition shrinks from 49 seats to about 42.
He has done this before. After the 2009 election, he took a week-long vacation before joining Netanyahu’s government. So don't take his refusal to work with the opposition right now as a final word. But it shows he is going to milk his position as kingmaker for all its worth.
Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman has largely cut off contact with his opposition partners, though there is some communication with their campaign staff, Channel 12 reports.
Liberman is not answering calls from Yashar chairman Gadi Eisenkot or B’Yachad chairman Naftali Bennett, according to the report.
Channel 12 says Liberman still stands by his vows not to join a government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or support a minority government that relies on Arab parties.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 The last deal on the table: Iran lets UN inspectors back into its bombed sites, Trump lets Iran sell oil, and Khamenei has days to decide before a week of strikes
Axios reports Qatar carried the idea to Tehran this week with Saudi, Turkish, Pakistani and Egyptian backing: revive last year’s Cairo agreement so IAEA inspectors return, park the uranium stockpile question, and trade oil waivers and frozen funds for food and medicine.
Iran’s public answer is no, with a senior official telling Reuters the ideas were “unacceptable,” yet the same government says it will take them to the supreme leader.
Trump told Axios he’ll “finish the job, either through a deal or another way,” and the other way is a week of strikes on leadership, energy and nuclear targets that the IDF chief and CENTCOM commander coordinated Monday.
Leadership is the word to watch, because Trump himself said two weeks ago that “we might have gone too far with the leaders” in February since “we don’t know who the hell we’re dealing with,” and now the plan is what? To do it again?

🚨🇮🇱 Arab parties are taking a more local approach inside Israel rather than the wider conflict
Their priority is ending the WORST treatment of Palestinian citizens, including crime, discrimination and neglect.
But they want Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir and Smotrich OUT first.
Partial counts still leave no majority, with Netanyahu’s bloc around 53 seats, the opposition at 48 and Arab parties at a record 19, while Lieberman has already ruled out any government that depends on their seats.
The rest of the opposition still has to decide if basic domestic issues are enough for them to sit with the Arab parties, or if they will walk.
