Here’s one of the more uplifting stories I’ve worked on in a while. I went to Mae Sot to hang out with Burmese women who are trying soccer for the first time — in exile. Stunning photos by ⁦@laurendecicca⁩ nytimes.com/2024/09/23/world…

"Ruth Banomyong, a professor of supply chain management at Thammasat University in Thailand, said there was little evidence that Thailand was benefiting. Chinese automakers, he said, operate within a “closed ecosystem” that makes it difficult for Thai companies to enter their supply chains because the core technology remains in China."
After Welcoming China’s Electric Vehicles, This Country Is Paying the Price "Several Thai auto-parts suppliers that depended on Japanese manufacturers went bankrupt, threatening a supply chain that employs about 700,000 workers." nytimes.com/2026/10/16/busin…

Thailand plans to raise excise tax on fully imported EVs to at least 30% Thailand’s Finance Ministry plans to seek Cabinet approval within two weeks to raise excise tax on fully imported electric vehicles with no Thai-made components from 10% to at least 30%, according to news reports. The change is expected to take effect on January 1, 2027. The proposal aims to protect automakers that have invested in Thai factories and encourage companies relying on imports to manufacture locally. The reports estimates the increase could add at least 200,000 baht to the price of a 1-million-baht vehicle. The proposed structure would have three tiers: the lowest rate for manufacturers meeting full local-content requirements, a middle rate for local factories heavily dependent on imported parts, and the highest rate for fully imported vehicles from companies without Thai factories. Revised local-content rules would emphasize high-tech components. The ministry also plans to base future vehicle excise rates on carbon dioxide emissions rather than powertrain technology. Lower-emission vehicles would receive lower rates as Thailand seeks to strengthen domestic production and retain its position as a regional automotive hub. #Thailand #EV #EVs

While consumer advocates have loathed the Malaysian government policy shifts on EVs, the intention appears to be to prevent repeating the vendor ecosystem disruptions Thailand is going through.
Chinese EVs are quickly replacing Japanese automakers who were once dominant in Thailand. The Thai government has courted Chinese EV investment but may be trying to slow down imports amidst growing concerns about job losses. Fantastic reporting @suilee nytimes.com/2026/10/16/busin…

Day one in China, with one goal: begin rebalancing our 🇪🇺🇨🇳 unsustainable trade deficit. I started by hearing directly from EU businesses here. The message around the table was clear: the need to improve access to the Chinese market, while boosting our economic security.

As I watched video of Xi this week, I couldn't help but think about this quote of his about the fickleness of human nature behind pomp and circumstance. And as a child and young man, he would have seen how his father, a master of the united front, used flattery instrumentally.
