"If A, then A. If B, then B."
Great essay! "If mathematical truths exist outside of human minds, awaiting discovery by any intelligence powerful enough to pursue them, then AI’s achievements are surely something to rejoice about. Why should it matter who or what makes the discoveries? But if mathematics is a creative human endeavor—a way of exercising our ingenuity and sharing those experiences with other people—then something achingly precious may be lost when the machines take over and leave us behind."

If you think "AGI" has now been reached in any sense, that is just a sign that you have a short context window

no offence but millennial stylists be like what if you styled the plain pants with a plain shirt and a chelsea boot
Working with Uniqlo this month to push their new Heattech stuff. My picks + ways to style. Everything is from Uniqlo (except the boots and the belt). Last pic is me on my roof after a beautiful beach day in October. Ily Encinitas.

I don’t get the govt comms on this at all. To the public, the effects of “hybrid warfare” and ordinary state failure are identical. They just see things not working. Esp if you won’t even allude to a specific threat. All you’re signalling is that you’re hopeless and incompetent.
This drip feed of government advice on stockpiling via guidance is not helpful and will make many people anxious. Feels like when they used the emergency alert unnecessarily this summer. If he believes there are genuine risks the PM should go on TV and say so to the public.

It really is over for reading stuff about stuff that happened recently or whatever newspapers were
Around 100 Telegraph staff are believed to have been told they are losing their jobs, almost four months after its takeover by Axel Springer Focus being put on new revenue streams such as "video, audio, puzzles, events, B2B, licensing, commerce and new products"

In the days of desk phones, people understood they were speaking into a mic millimetres away from their mouth but now people on teams calls seem to think they are talking to someone about 20 feet away , presumably based on the size of the faces on their monitor

About that "global" oil market...
CHART OF THE DAY: With freight ballooning to prohibitively expensive levels, the physical oil market is breaking apart. Now, it’s all about location, location, location: depending of where, oil sells at a huge premia or an enormous discounts. Case in point, Canadian crude ⤵️

The year is 2032. The only remaining job done by humans is Vending Machine Operative. The three leading AI vending machine start-ups have an aggregate valuation of 150% of world GDP.

You see this again and again in British political life: the dream of "impartial" technocracy just leading to power vacuums and drift
Replying to @EdwardEGibbon
You have seen this time and again in English HE. Ministers handed off significant power to the OfS, which is meant to regulate universities. But the OfS avoids key questions because it identifies them as political and therefore the responsibility of ministers.

Reminiscent of Fry & Laurie. Damn!!
Live by the sword, die by the sword. Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets …

Very easy to overstate care wage problem - vast majority of carers were British until recent 3rd world replacement program starting c. 2022. Historically this is a job that has paid a slight premium to e.g. supermarket work and would probably clear again if that was restored
If you think about the cost of immigrant workers in the care system in terms of wages plus long term welfare/benefits for them and family with ILR....it might be significantly more financially efficient for the state to top up care worker wages to the extent that our unemployed fancied it. No one's that into it for 20k. What about 50k? 75k?

The last pillars of the at ease with itself groovy baby 90s UK are crumbling before our eyes
Esto es (foto de hoy) lo que queda del que era Ayuntamiento de Londres, diseñado por Norman Foster y uno de mis edificios favoritos del mundo por diseño, significado, contexto y eficiencia energética. Tengo dos preguntas al respecto 👇

It is a relief that Britain seems to have avoided this by and large. Craft beer has settled into quite a nice niche here, generally quite tasteful brands like Cloudwater or Burning Sky sold in smart, independent shops, the preserve of sensitive, bearded types.
The ‘craft beer for alcoholics’ trend is now totally out of control. Basically every tall boy from a ‘craft brewer’ is approaching 10% ABV. Even Bell’s - once a connoisseur’s quaff - is getting in on it. When folks drinks less, I guess you gotta focus harder on your tier-1s

We have nationwide rent controls now. This tribunal didn’t just stop a rent rise within a tenancy, it cut the rent to below what had been agreed between the landlord and the tenant at the start of the tenancy based on a judgement of what the property is worth.

everyone stopped having three kids except the very rich
Replying to @mtkonczal
Is this a new status symbol? I don't think so. It looks more like children fall for all families except the 1% over the past 30 years. Maybe the things that made children more difficult for the 99% just bounced right off the 1%? /2
