PLEASE. Let the police catch the shooter and make sure all of our students, faculty, and staff are safe before using this situation to make a point - any point - about guns. My students are barricaded in classrooms and running for their lives, and it's devastating. #MSU

Your vote always counts! Less than 2% separated the two Democrat endorsed winners from the next two, both Republican endorsed. But the difference in attitudes towards MSU workers and academic freedom was 100%.

This trustees race was insanely close. Less than 2% separates the top four candidates for MSU's Board of Trustees.

This university just dismissed me as a geographer on the TT along with 32 other professors. So apply at your own peril. This is looking more capricious every day.

75% of US faculty are contingent, and it's common for faculty at smaller colleges to teach 4-5 classes a semester + service + advising. I've done some peer reviewing, but when you're constantly searching for jobs and building debt trying to stay alive in this system, where /
1/ Peer review is in trouble! So much of the knowledge we produce & share rests on the idea that our work goes through a rigorous review by experts. After serving as an editor-in-chief for 5 yrs. & an associate editor for 3 yrs., I'm worried that our system is in trouble:

is the time? You're asking the majority of available faculty to do a service that helps 25% get better, more secure and generally higher paying jobs than most of us will ever get, and you're asking for that service for free. In other words, you're asking /

people who are overwhelmed, underpaid, and taken advantage of by higher ed to labor for free in a system that has been crushing academia and knowledge production for decades. Peer review isn't broken. Higher education is.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but: There is no reason to earn a PhD beyond personal fulfillment.

Guns have no place in the classroom. We stand with March for Our Lives and are committed to making common sense gun control legislation a reality.

We have reached a settlement with MSU that both our leadership team and our state federation, AFT Michigan, categorize as a historic win.
