REWIND… ⏪ September 27, 1994. The day I WAS BORN as an artist. My debut album #brandy was released, and the dream I had carried as a little girl became something I could hold in my hands… my name on the cover, my whole heart in the music. One of the happiest days of my entire life. Everything I dreamed of becoming… a singer, a dancer, an actress, an artist… was alive in that girl. She had so much she wanted to give. She still does. Music means everything to me. It has held so many versions of who I am, and somehow, through every change, it still recognizes me. There are parts of my heart I have only ever been able to reach by singing. To have shared those parts with you for thirty-two years… God, thank You for a life that has allowed my soul to speak. And now, watching my beautiful daughter, @syraismith Sy’rai, follow her own voice… I understand that a dream can come true and still have more to give you. Once, I was the little girl reaching. Now I get to watch my little girl reach for hers. There are places in a mother’s heart that only her child can awaken. Sharing the stage with Usher @usher and Keh @kehlani this weekend, being among my creative peers… I felt that divine spark burning so beautifully. The passion. The love. The joy of creating together. After all these years, music can still make me feel like something extraordinary is about to begin. To everyone who has made room for my voice in your life… thank you. For singing with me. For growing with me. For letting something that began in my heart become part of yours. Today, I wish I could hold that girl from 1994 and let her feel how deeply we are loved. How much her dream would mean. How much wonder was still waiting. Thirty-two years later… I still have butterflies. Lea Salonga, @msleasalonga through Jasmine and Mulan, you did more than give princesses their songs… you gave children who had been waiting outside the fairytale a way inside. Before the world knew how to speak about representation, you had already turned it into sound. Your history is filled with firsts…the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award, a Disney Legend, and now the first Filipina ever honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But “first” is not the deepest word in your story. The deepest word is “after.” Who could dream after you? Who could enter after you? Who could walk through because you left the doorway open? You did not merely become possible. You made possibility contagious. Having the blessing of singing A Whole New World beside you, I stopped being the singer and became the witness. The world knows the gold in your voice. I had the blessing of discovering the gold in your heart. Hollywood gave you a star…but that star did not make you light.
