A new volume of the BollySwar series is out - BollySwar: 1951 - 1960. This covers the Hindi film music of the 1950s, the most influential decade of Hindi cinema. The impact of the Hindi films and Hindi film music made in this period lasts to this day. amazon.in/dp/B0DSGXQDTB

If I'm not mistaken, Shashwat Sachdev is one of the guests (he sampled a song each by RDB and KA in Dhurandhar) and the Raj Kapil Sharma is referring to is Raj Sodha on the saxophone, who'd obviously know who did Don. I wish one of them had corrected Kapil.
यह कपिल शर्मा को कौन बताएगा कि डॉन में पंचम दा का संगीत नहीं था। वो कारनामा कल्याण जी भाई आनंद जी भाई का था।

Hindi film composer Chitragupta's BA comes up in about 20 days' time. Happy to share this very short interview that *Yours Truly* did with their sons *Anand-Milind* on Chitragupta's first DA occasion. Got published in the NFDC India monthly magazine *Cinema In India* (Feb 1992).

This may help people genuinely trying to understand how Mangal Rang is qawwali coded. Think not of proper qawwalis but how ARR has used Sufi/Qawwali influences previously.

The track does have the Sufi/qawwali vibes with similar sounding phrases and tone as heard in a few ARR Sufi/Qawwali tracks.

What I was afraid of - some Ramayana songs sound qawwali coded. Why ARR why? It was clever, perhaps even subversive, in Varaha Nadikkarai Oram; it is plain inappropriate and disrespectful in Ramayana.

Over the last 15 years, I have classified all Hindi film songs by genre including Sufi/Qawwali. I have earned the right to have opinions on musical influences in Hindi film music. You may disagree with them, but don't lecture me on what I can/cannot do. myswar.co/song/genre/Sufi-Qa…

I don’t subscribe to hate. But I also don’t believe in being uncritical of artists to “protect” them from hate.

A History of Violence is why I’ll watch any movie that features Viggo Mortensen.

Sonu Nigam's travails in Karnataka are not over yet. Heard from someone who was supposed to attend his Bangalore concert a few days ago that the show was cancelled (or postponed?) because some local activists objected.
Sonu Nigam is the unluckiest, most under-appreciated Indian artist ever. His career has been jinxed by his plain speaking against intolerant individuals/groups who wield a lot of power. He should have been the Rafi of our times. Future generations will wonder why he wasn’t.

If you are in the Indian movie/film music space, like I am, being right of center/conservative automatically makes you an outcast. Most Indian cinema/music lovers are left of centre. This is not an issue on its own - I follow many people with whom I have political disagreements.

The problem is that many of these people actively isolate fellow cinema/music lovers who don't align with them politically. Some handles whom I've known here for a while, have even advised me against posting about politics -

while following and having no problems with chumps like this. This is disappointing. Thankfully I am not beholden to anyone and have the freedom to do my own thing. I speak my mind but I try to be civil. However, I have no problem responding in kind to rudeness/foul language.

Mangal Rang is an obviously qawwali-coded song in Ramayana - the chorus, the "rang" metaphor (most famously used in Aaj Rang Hai), and the guitar which evokes bulbul tarang. Aside: self-inspired from Enna Solla Pogirai.

Since this is getting so much traction - do check my website myswar.co if you're a Hindi film music fan. It's the most extensive documentation of Hindi film music from 1931 to present date, with comprehensive/accurate credits. :-)

Yes. Old man is spiralling. Needs intervention from family/friends.
Naseeruddin Shah’s latest video gives scary vibes. Black spots for eyes because of the lighting, nose flaring, almost frothing at the mouth - visceral anger is palpable. If we question his silence when there was so much violence in West Bengal earlier the usual suspects will pipe in with don’t do whataboutery
