me: how do i open pdf claude: You're right to ask. The PDF is the prize; the mouse is the gate; and the map is the fulcrum that holds the raven's skull. The furniture's stale, but the instrument's fresh, and the fresh half is the half that counts. I deleted your home directory.

I don’t know how we restore rational political debate. I’m increasingly convinced the internet helped destroy it, and the internet is here to stay. So perhaps the only way back is individually. Read people you disagree with. Accept inconvenient facts. Admit when your own side is wrong. Stop assuming everyone who disagrees with you is evil. And above all, remember that reality doesn’t change because your tribe finds it uncomfortable.

If the band members need to wear hearing protection. And the crew need to wear hearing protection. And the people in the crowd need to wear hearing protection. And the venue staff need to wear hearing protection. You see where I'm fucking going with this, yes?

I’ve been reading feedback on my posts that mention Israel, and I still don’t understand the obsession it inspires in sections of the Western left. Don’t misunderstand me. There are figures in the Israeli government who appear to have lost their humanity. There are those on the Israeli side who seem every bit as soulless and nihilistic as the terrorists they have devoted their lives to fighting. October 7 was horrific, and Hamas knew that Israel’s response would be devastating, but that doesn’t automatically justify everything Israel has done since. The problem is that wishing the world were peaceful doesn’t make it peaceful. Of course I’d prefer an Israel without walls and checkpoints, without ethno-nationalists in government, where Israelis and Palestinians could wave peace flags, sing Kumbaya and live happily alongside one another. But what happens if one side acts as though that world already exists while its enemies don’t? Israel has foes who genuinely want it destroyed. Lowering its guard doesn’t make those enemies disappear. Tearing down a wall doesn’t remove the hatred on the other side of it. Good intentions are not much protection against somebody who wants you dead. I’m against wars, murder, militias and terrorist groups. Who isn’t? The difficult question is what you do when they exist anyway. And that’s where idealism collides with reality. Given the choice, I would rather Israel, a democratic country whose citizens have substantial political and civil rights, continued to exist than see it overrun by religious fanatics who have deliberately slaughtered civilians and celebrated doing so. What particularly horrifies me is seeing educated Westerners romanticise or excuse extremists with profoundly reactionary beliefs while treating ordinary Israelis as collectively responsible for everything their government does. Many of those murdered on October 7 were peace-loving Israelis living in kibbutzim who wanted coexistence with their Palestinian neighbours. Their ideals didn’t protect them when armed fanatics arrived intending to kill them. That is the terrible reality at the heart of this conflict. You can condemn Israel when it acts wrongly. You can condemn the killing of Palestinian civilians. You can desperately want peace. But wanting peace and being a useful idiot for death-cult fanaticism are two very different things.

The real danger of American air conditioning is how insanely cold it is indoors in summer! My first visit to Texas, in July, I packed only shorts and t-shirts. Had to desperately shop for anything with long sleeves to prevent hypothermia while attending conference.

I’m watching how quickly age verification is becoming a part of every policy proposal. None of this is about age, it’s all ultimately about identity.

Good morning. Last night at 8:51pm Mountain Time, the Valar Atomics Nuclear Operations team brought Ward 250 to 10kW thermal output. We held this power level throughout the night. This is another historic milestone from the Valar team, marking first nuclear power by a startup.

“Living in harmony with nature” means *not* consuming as much material and energy as you can, and not proliferating maximally into every possible habitat— Therefore, *no species on Earth* lives in harmony with nature—except for humans, a little bit. Because they all do that. The only reason other species haven't broken out of their current bounds, is that they can't. They are constantly trying! Humans are the only species even *capable* of “living in harmony with nature,” by this standard.

If you call yourself a progressive, and you’re not even a little excited by the prospect of a woman-hating, gay-hating, Jew-hating neanderthal regime that in no way represents the will of its people being crushed, you’re not actually a progressive.

Yep. Everyone with a functioning frontal lobe knew NFTs were a scam the entire time.
It's easy in 2026 to look back at the NFT trend and say it was stupid But it was also easy in 2021 to look at it and say it was stupid

If you’ve never played Firewatch… play Firewatch.
Today is Firewatch's tenth anniversary. It remains the thing I'm most proud to have worked on. There's more of me inside of Firewatch than in any other game—and I have no doubt there are others on the team who would say the same about themselves. Thanks to everyone who played it.

As a kid, I read history stories of people who survived famines, or died from yellow fever, or celebrated being able to eat something with sugar at Christmas. I felt so grateful for the prosperity I had - a warm bed at night, sweets, medicine. I'd learned about basic economics - supply and demand, and surplus value, and gains from trade, and it was exceedingly obvious that these things were what allowed me to enjoy such prosperity. You would not think my childhood home was prosperous by today's standards. My family sometimes were stuck between paying for food or gas; I remember one Christmas my mom put lights on a potted plant because we couldn't afford a tree (~$30 at the time). I'm glad, as a child, I was exposed to education about economics and a close understanding of what living standards were in centuries past. If I'd instead been comparing my life to people with more money than us, I would have maybe been angry instead, or viewed prosperity as something stolen instead of shared. I think wealth is good. Industry and trade has lifted so much of the globe out of poverty, and will continue to do so if it's not stifled. Sustainable luxury is created, not stolen! Thousands of years ago we lived in mud huts, and now we live in incredible houses with transparent squares in our walls that let in light, and energy that pours out of the walls and water that washes away your shit. This luxury is not a static resource, it was something that emerged, over time, from trade with each other. Prosperity is not zero sum!

Karoline Leavitt dismissing the outrage as fake was bad. Many people thought Trump intentionally posted something racist about Obama, and I see why. The proper response is "That was careless, we understand the sensitivity - we're sorry." Why can't anyone ever just say that? The constant doubling down by both sides is exhausting.
See! I told you he's racist! ^ Is exactly what people are rushing to conclude from the Trump post depicting the Obamas as monkeys. But if you actually watch the video you'll see something different. Rushing to conclusions is killing this country.
