A2 I empower them by letting them take on leadership roles. If they come to me with an idea, I say, "Wow. I love it. How can you make it happen? How can I support you?" Our #ClimateStrike on Friday was an example of S initiative & leadership.

A2 In my ELA class, I teach a mini-lesson, then set up a series of activity choices for Ss. One S shared their word of the day & then takes over running the class. They learn leadership skills and I'm free to conference with Ss.

So agree - it takes time. Unfortunately, it can be quickly lost with a misstep. We have to work hard at building it and then equally hard on not losing it, especially when stress is high.

A2 Our school is implementing NGSS this year. It's a change of thinking for many Ts & they need support & training. Much of our energy is going there this year, but so far the impact is worth it. Ss are so much more engaged!

We have created and used benchmark sheets to help when designing assesments and instruction.
With this example (thesis writing) we find it valuable to have kids try and write examples at all four levels - helps them feel the progression.

This is so true! Our Ss took part in the global #ClimateStrike on Friday. They prepped all week, taking time out from regular classes, but the learning will stick.

A4 The most positive thing I've done has been to flip my feedback. I no longer spend hours at home giving feedback to writing drafts, I now guide Ss to give themselves feedback, during a longer conference. Ss learn so much more!
