Thanks @ashleevance for sparking this discussion. I've said this in many discussions: the reason India VC hasn't produced real venture returns historically is simply because it's not taken enough real venture risk. But things are getting better. Two archetypes: the experienced technologist / academic, and the very young rebellious autodidact, are both increasingly getting funded. Funds like ours have been the FIRST believers (since 2022) in 10 deep-tech ventures @AntlerIndia: @inspecity - Logistics for cities in space @AsperaAero - Autonomous cargo planes, by @khushhhi_ who you profiled) Green Aero Propulsion - To make India a producer of advanced turbine engines @MEINE_electric - Fast charging, long-duration energy storage @BioMandrake - Protein design and gene editing infrastructure, alternative to CRISPR attempted from India @ArmoryShield - Counter-drone systems Uncharted AI - Robotics for mining DUSQ @get_innergize - Most advanced sleep regulation system @kubocare - Hardware for senior care @hexo - Self-learning agent infrastructure We're doing our bit, and it's easy to curse the VC ecosystem, but the challenges are ofc nuanced and extend well beyond VCs: (1) Historically, first checks were hindered not only because of a lack of courage or imagination, but also because the pre-seed / angel guys had no clue who would fund ventures downstream. There was almost nothing....changing rapidly in the last 2-3 yrs. (Credit to govt, RDI, the OG deeptech funds growing in size, as well as the impact of folks like @srajagopalan @lachygroom...) (2) Personally, I am now more focused on the question of DEMAND sources (pilots, local corporates, govt procurement outside of defence and space..) for deeptech startups than funding alone. E.g. China even insures the first customers of new tech. Part of the solution is to connect Indian deep-tech founders globally, pretty early. This is what we spend a lot of effort on: xitter.cf/nitinsharma1/status/21… (3) Definitely need many more people doing much larger first checks for true moonshots. (4) Other systemic factors: When it takes 1-2 years to shut companies down, when domestic corporates run endless pilots, don't value startups, or have no incentives to bet on local deep tech startups, it's not hard to see why historically VCs in places outside of Silicon Valley have sucked in taking true deep tech risk. But this is all in the past. The future looks bright for the 22nd century Indian founder.
Why are Indian VCs so afraid to take risk and make money? Someone should go to India and take risk and make money. Our story - corememory.com/p/a-new-india…

The most important and trustworthy service every parent needs is now on tap - thanks to team Maasi.
When @Bhavnasuresh met Aashu - she was sure about backing them almost as soon as she walked out of the first meeting. This team is obsessed about helping parents feel 100% sure that their child is in safe hands, and finding every child their 'Maasi'. Maasi is not a subscription or quick-service business, it's about helping women and mothers everywhere find the layer of trust and security they were missing.

A new series on our founders at @AntlerIndia Listen to this video from @nitinsharma1 on how we use our A-GOATx framework to spot great founders. And start working with them right before their Day 0. Here's presenting the outstanding Priyanshu from BazaarNow
OBSESSED OUTLIERS - A New Series #1 Priyanshu Jain (BazaarNow) We’re excited to share some new short stories, of founders and ideas we have backed in recent times. Perhaps the coolest changes happening in Indian commerce aren't in Bangalore or Gurgaon. They are in Mandya or Ramnagara. Priyanshu, Arjun and Tarithmay are building a new retail channel for millions underserved by modern retail. Just a few months in, @bazaarnow is already scaling towards 15,000 orders a day (apart from raising $9M+) This is the quick story of how I met Priyanshu in a cafe on a Sunday, and within 15 minutes, knew we had to back him. Why he scores highly on a framework we call “A-GOAT-X” And why we try to keep asking “what if it goes right?” It’s a good example of how we love backing entirely new concepts pre-product and pre-traction, how often we invest directly to lead $1M rounds (vs. Residency), and how quickly we @AntlerIndia like to develop that conviction. And above all how our process is mostly about the founder’s exceptional insights or spikes. Something that makes them a truly Obsessed Outlier.

IMHO, this is a very important article by @astrokaran Even with the local funding boom, Indian deeptech startups should want to look abroad early on for customer access. (Both for revenue + to benchmark themselves against the best and beat them on some vector. Being the best in India isn’t enough). I have found myself making the same point in at least 50 different conversations over the last quarter. The recent funding stimulus ($11 bn) for #deeptech is incredible, much needed, game changing. But in parallel, new demand sources (short-term trials, long-term revenue) also have to grow beyond govt buying in defence / space. 3 basic options: (1) The pace at which the Indian private sector tries and buys from deeptech startups. W.r.t the mentality of endless pilots, and large company ego. This won’t change fast… (2) Procurement from the govt outside of defense and space. China even insures the first customers of new tech. (3) Faster ways for Indian deeptech startups to find GLOBAL demand. Else the market will be distorted. Just too many VCs rebranding themselves as deep tech to seek LP capital is not going to make us a deeptech nation :) PS: In our small way, #3 is where we are aiming to help beyond the capital. With the 10 deeptech (yes, actual deeptech) ventures we have been the earliest investors in, we are trying to facilitate more global access early on. We’ve helped 7 of these find their first customers and capital in Australia, the US and Japan. More to come. Inspecity Green Aero Propulsion Armory Meine Electric Uncharted AI Mandrake Bio Aspera Kubo Care DUSQ Aina @AntlerIndia
India now gives deep-tech startups, the ones building satellites, defence systems and medical devices, enough money to build working products. Selling them is harder. Almost no buyer in India, private or government, wants to be a young company's first customer.🧵

A prototype he sent to one friend became a $2B company. Tanay Kothari grew up in Delhi and spent 3 years building hardware that turned thoughts into text. When a friend in India wanted to try it, he packaged the software into a desktop app. 2 friends became 100. That app became what we know today as Wispr Flow. At Embark 3, Tanay joined @nitinsharma1 to share his lessons on building for the US. Through Embark, we lead your $1M pre-seed and plug you into our Bay Area network of investors, operators and founders like Tanay to help you find real traction and PMF in the US. Embark 4 flies to SF this October. Follow along ✈️

Congrats guys @RebhavBharadwaj @adityathakurgg Young A.I.-native founders are surprising everyone with their clock speed and audacity. Excited for @getdodgeai’s next phase, working with @Accel (@skirani @prayanks) and Google @AIFuturesFund Dodge is yet another Antler Embark startup with int’l founders gaining traction quickly in the US market. Great also to partner with our good friend and veteran investor @rohini_c and the amazing @aarthir Rebhav was our intern :) and we knew we had to back him - even if a boring enterprise category wasn’t the obvious fit. It’s been great to see him and Aditya multiply their ambition and execute: from landing one of the largest Fortune 500 customers within a quarter of landing in the US, going through @AntlerGlobal Embark, all the way now to saving 26,000 (outsourced) billable hours already for their customers. ITSM, and specifically ERP maintenance and system integrator spend is a great fit for agentic AI automation, and Dodge AI has a great shot at being a market leader. entrepreneur.economictimes.i…
Excited to announce that we've raised $2.65M from @Accel and Google's @AIFuturesFund to re-imagine how enterprise software is maintained. Just this year, @getdodgeai has helped teams running SAP, Oracle Fusion, JD Edwards, and more save more than 26,000 hours previously billed by outsourced firms. This round was co-led by @Accel & Google's @AIFuturesFund, with participation from NewBuild Venture Capital, @AntlerGlobal, Schema Ventures, and angels from the SAP ecosystem. For the better part of the last 3 decades, enterprises have adopted mission-critical software called an ERP to track finances, logistics, discounts, inventory, and more. All of these systems become super customized, and there's an entire industry that implements them: the system integration industry. After you go live, the problem doesn't stop there. As the company evolves, you want these systems to change with it. At the same time, you also have to firefight all the daily operational incidents that happen within these systems. What ends up happening today is that enterprises end up spending more than $600 billion a year just maintaining ERPs! The traditional solution for enterprises has been to partner with these large outsourcing companies and throw 20 to 50 "consultants" at the problem. With always-on agents becoming a reality today, we think there is a better solution that combines both the functional expertise of the humans who have been holding the industry together with long-horizon agents that capture context across systems and custom processes. Dodge AI is already working with dozens of enterprises, most of whom are publicly listed companies across the world, to show them a better way. Excited to partner with @prayanks, @JRSilber, @nitinsharma1, @aarthir, @rohini_c, and more. Back to work now!

Latest in a series of fantastic portfolio raises… great work team Dodge! More to come very soon…
So @RebhavBharadwaj came through Antler three times: first as an intern on our team, then in the Residency, then as part of Embark to crack their US GTM. Always a builder, we've seen him in action long before we ever saw a pitch - hustling and building things like a chrome extension to fix our broken CRM. We backed him and @AdityaThakurGG through the Antler Residency when they started solving for chargeback disputes. They later realised the real problem sat deeper, in broken ERP systems. That insight became what @getdodgeai is today. Today they announced $2.65M led by @Accel and @Google AI Futures Fund. And we're proud to have doubled down as Dodge continues to rampage ahead. @nitinsharma1 @jasnoorgill @telljeeves @ChopraBrother @raghavgoyal97 @HimankAmar
