On this day in 1993, Ruud Gullit scored the winner for Sampdoria against Milan, the club that had pushed him out on loan, and ended their 72-week run at the top of Serie A. He came back to Milan and faced Sampdoria in the Supercoppa Italiana, scored the late equalizer which led to Milan winning on penalties, then returned to Sampdoria again, before leaving Italy for good. Before he came to Milan, they had not won a Scudetto in nine years and their last European Cup title was 20 years old. In six seasons he won everything with the club. Three league titles, two Supercoppa Italiana, two European Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups, scoring four times across all those finals. But in the summer of 1993 the relationship had gone sour. Fabio Capello had left him out of the squad for the Champions League final, due to the tournament's foreign player restrictions, and Gullit was loaned out to Sven-Göran Eriksson's Sampdoria for one season. On the 31st of October 1993, league leaders Milan visited Sampdoria's Marassi still unbeaten at the top of the table for 72 consecutive weeks. They led 2-0 in the first half hour, but Sampdoria came back in the second half. Gullit with an assist for Srečko Katanec's 1-2 header, and Roberto Mancini converted a penalty to make it 2-2. Then, in the 78th minute, Gullit hit a strike past his former teammates to win it 3-2, personally ending Milan's historical unbeaten run. Milan still went on to win the title that season. Gullit's Sampdoria finished third, but won the Coppa Italia. He briefly returned to Milan in 1994, where he helped the club win the Supercoppa Italiana, scoring the 1-1 against Sampdoria in the final, then joined them again in November for the remainder of the season, before finally leaving the Serie A for a move to Chelsea.
