In 1979, Richard Avedon — who had made his name with portraits of the rich and powerful — drove across the West, stopping in 189 towns, photographing 752 people, crafting a new vision of the area. The fruits of that project are now on view in Fort Worth. nyti.ms/3V1MRYs
