A Tesla Semi caught fire on Interstate 880 in Hayward, California, on Tuesday evening, closing the freeway in both directions for hours. The driver was not hurt. The fire was reported around 5:35 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Route 92, with no crash and no other vehicles involved. The California Highway Patrol warned that the battery fire could burn for 15 to 18 hours. Northbound lanes reopened around 8:40 p.m., and all lanes were back open by Wednesday morning. The driver told CHP the truck “simply caught fire” and that they didn’t know why. The cause is under investigation. The truck appears to be one of PepsiCo’s early Frito-Lay Semis, not one of the new production trucks from Tesla’s Semi Factory. More in our EVwire article: evwire.com/p/tesla-semi-fire…

Tesla’s next-generation Roadster packs a 1 MW drive unit, details that weren’t covered at the unveiling. Tesla says the battery and drive unit together deliver 1 MW, one-third more than the Model S Plaid, with half the mass. The rear drive unit packs two motors into one housing, though it remains to be seen if a third motor is present in the front. The Roadster's UI is also retro-futuristic, with extremely smooth transitions and even a nice easter egg. Production is expected to start in 2028. H/T @SawyerMerritt and @itskyleconner for the cool pics and vids. More in our EVwire article: evwire.com/p/tesla-roadster-…
