It is benchmarking test time! In spring, this test is used to demonstrate his learning, yes, but more importantly to generate a reading list that will engage and challenge him all summer long. And this year, there are some absolute BANGERS, so let's dive in. (xposted from bsky)

I get so many phone calls from Scam Likely that I've come to think of him as an annoying old friend, the kind that only calls when he wants something from you. Which is why I just looked at my ringing phone and said, "Oh my GOD, Scam, stop calling! I'm not giving you anything!"

Anyway, now I'm imagining what ol' Scam looks like, and I don't know a lot yet, but he definitely wears a hat tilted forward and thinks it makes him look like Indiana Jones when in reality it makes him look like a flasher

Does anyone out there have any links to Buffy meta, especially contemporaneous Buffy meta? The earthling’s obsession only grows

Oh, wow! reena_jenkins made a podfic for my Stranger Things story that I posted LAST NIGHT, which honestly feels like some kind of miracle speed podficcing, and it's great! archiveofourown.org/works/47…

The earthling is in a mood today (totally fair; he had to get up early for an orthodontist appointment) and he is IRKED at all the stuff he has to watch before the Buffy DVDs will play. “You’re making me WANT to pirate, FBI!”

I saw the phrase "werewolf renaissance" on Tumblr and now I yearn for a book where werewolves aren't battling to be alpha while banging human women, but rather having a period of massive artistic and social development, creating new ways of thinking and expressing themselves

Still cannot read Twitter (miss you all; come back, third party apps!), but I wanted to update you on the alarming #GardenOfDoom situation. Pictured: one of what we now call the tomato mounds. The wall behind it is six feet high.

Inside this tomato mound, you can kind of see the largest tomato cage we could find, deployed back when it was still possible to approach the tomatoes. No instructions were provided on what to do when your tomato has eaten the cage, unfortunately

It's the last benchmarking test of the year (and possibly of the earthling's school career -- high school may not do this!), so it's once again time for: Things an Algorithm Thinks an Eighth Grader Should Read!

But I hear what you're saying: "TFV, these are all absolute bangers, yes, but they're non-fiction! Is there no fiction suitable for eighth graders?" Here is the lone fiction book on the list: -Last December, by Matt Bream, a middle grade book about a hockey player, I think?

Extremely disappointed to report that I don't seem to be able to get a copy of Last December. I just want to read this mysterious fiction book, and I'm being THWARTED by the publishing industry!
