There's a section in Augustine's Confessions that describes an astrologer making up a chart for the son of a rich man and the son of a slave who are both born at the same time. Despite sharing a chart which predicts success, the slave's son spends his life as a slave.
being a lesbian and a dialectical materialist is a wild experience bc every time astrology gets brought up by a femme i have to explain how horoscopes are fake and a part of esoteric nazism and telling her that feels like i just shot her family dog infront of her

This is why you should be able to squat 150kg at least because what if a baby elephant wants to ride your back and you don't have enough strength to pick it up. Couldn't be me.

Replying to @thereriver
doctors would sometimes be called as expert witnesses to testify in freedom trials when the plaintiff's race was in dispute. in some of the frontier states they'd probably be the only locals "skilled in the natural history of the races of men," as one case put it

So that is school
We created gyms because modern day work no longer required physical activity. Without exercise, our muscles atrophy. I predict we’ll need gyms for our brains too, once AI starts doing our knowledge work.

I want an AI to wash, sort, and fold all my laundry for me
I’m a competent adult. Why do I need an “AI agent” to check into a flight for me? I’m literate. Why do I need an “AI agent” to read and write emails for me? Also, I don’t get so many emails that I can’t answer them myself. The reason “no one uses AI” is that there’s no serious utility here for the vast majority of people.

apropos of nothing, if you're now an academic (or someone else we might optimistically call a professional reader), when did you learn to read?

A good thread. No surprises for those in the sector but key points: humanities massively subsidise science teaching; universities have already cut costs very significantly.
In exciting news for about five people, KPMG have produced a new report for the Department of Education on the cost of teaching university degrees. Thread on some points of interest, especially the financial crisis engulfing English Higher Education.
