Monte Williams: The best high school running back to touch the grass in my opinion. My childhood friend and teammate. 2000 State Champions
When the conversation turns to the greatest players in Georgia high school football history, one name deserves to be mentioned immediately—Monte Williams of Commerce High School.
A hometown hero from Commerce, Georgia, Williams built a legacy that has stood the test of time and cemented his place among the all-time greats. More than two decades after his final high scool game, his records remain untouched, and his impact on Georgia football is still felt today.
A Record-Setting Career
From 1997 to 2000, Monte Williams was the engine that powered the Commerce Tigers football program. During his four-year career, Commerce won four consecutive region championships and compiled an impressive 48-6 record. Most importantly, Williams helped lead the Tigers to the 2000 Class A State Championship.
His career numbers are simply staggering:
- 8,844 career rushing yards – Georgia's all-time leading rusher.
- 105 rushing touchdowns – Tied for fourth-most in state history.
- Averaged 9.3 yards per carry throughout his career.
- Rushed for 1,875 yards as a freshman and 2,505 yards as a senior.
Those numbers place him not only among Georgia's greatest players but among the top high school running backs in American football history.
A Championship Performance for the Ages
The defining moment of Williams' career came in the 2000 state championship game against the powerhouse Buford Wolves.
On the biggest stage, Williams delivered one of the greatest performances in Georgia state championship history:
- 287 rushing yards
- One receiving touchdown on a 41-yard catch
- Led Commerce to its second state championship in school history.
It was the perfect ending to a legendary high school career.
A Unique Talent
Standing just 5-foot-7 and 168 pounds, Monte Williams wasn't the biggest player on the field. But what he lacked in size, he made up for with elite vision, quickness, and an uncanny ability to make defenders miss.
Many who watched him play described him as one of the most elusive runners they had ever seen. His stop-start ability, balance, and acceleration made him nearly impossible to tackle in open space.
Commerce football historian Jeff Prickett once described Williams as:
«"The most elusive, zigzagging, side-stepping, dodging water bug of a player that I have ever seen."»
That description still perfectly captures what made Monte Williams so special.
Individual Honors
Williams' dominance earned him statewide recognition:
- Three-time First-Team All-State selection (1998-2000)
- Honorable Mention All-State as a freshman
- Georgia Sports Writers Association All-Class Player of the Year in 1999.
Despite his incredible production, his size caused many Division I programs to overlook him during the recruiting process, a reminder that recruiting evaluations are never perfect.
Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame
In 2022, Williams received one of the highest honors possible when he became a member of the inaugural class of the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame. His induction recognized not only his record-setting statistics but also his lasting impact on the game of football in the state of Georgia.
A Legacy That Lives On
More than twenty years later, Monte Williams' rushing record still stands. In an era of spread offenses and explosive football, nobody has been able to eclipse his 8,844 career rushing yards.
For the people of Commerce, he is more than a record holder—he is a legend.
For Georgia high school football fans, he is proof that greatness isn't measured by size, stars, or recruiting rankings.
It's measured by production, championships, and the legacy you leave behind.
And when it comes to high school running backs in Georgia, there may never be another quite like Monte Williams of Commerce High School.
