Nigerians deserve better services. They also deserve institutions that understand their responsibilities, respect the law and know how to do their jobs without turning everything into a show of power. What the sector needs is lawmaking that supports it, not populist theater.

Okay, say the CEOs appear. Then what? Can the House impose regulatory penalties? Who enforces them? If the answers eventually lead back to the NCC, what exactly have we achieved by bypassing the regulator in the first place?

This is the Nigerian institutional oversabi that gets in the way of solving problems. Everybody wants to demonstrate authority, even when there is already an institution with the specific mandate to act. Section 88 of the Constitution does not give the National Assembly unlimited powers to investigate anything and everything.

Nigeria already has an institution, the NCC, whose job is to hold telecoms accountable for service quality. It has the power to monitor, penalise and enforce and has already imposed over ₦12 billion in penalties on operators. So why is the House bypassing the regulator?

The House of Reps has summoned telecom CEOs and threatened to arrest them over poor network quality. While it sounds like action, there's a problem: the law already says this isn't how it works. This lawyer looks at the legal basis👇🏾

ILEMONA ONOJA: "On October 21, 2026, an ad hoc committee of the house of representatives summoned the chief executives of four Nigerian telecommunications companies, demanding they appear on October 28 to account for what the committee called “poor network quality.” A threat of arrest accompanied the summons. The scene was dramatic, but, on the law, deeply familiar. The frustration that drives this summons is legitimate. Millions of Nigerians contend with dropped calls, slow data speeds, and service interruptions that affect daily life and commerce. Legislators who channel that frustration are responding to a real public interest. The question, however, is whether an ad hoc hearing is the right instrument, or whether the Constitution already provides a better one. On this point, the judiciary has spoken with remarkable consistency for more than four decades."

you are a fool, leave that bird alone you birdy-fool!
God is heavily with me.
Driving along Calabar by pass road. This bird sighted us, flew to the road, landed in the middle of the road.
When our vehicle approached, the power of God arrested this bird and it could not leave that spot again. I came down spoke few tongues and lifted it.
For those who do not know this bird, this is the bird that cries at midnight and is commonly used by the forces of darkness for different assignments.
