The original Sovereignty Gaps essay we published has been quietly cooking: multiple incubations and a fund backing Sovereignty Gaps companies have been launched.
We are republishing this essay now for broader reach, with newly introduced paragraphs!

Bernard Arnault going direct is remarkable and worth reading in full
The single most impressive thing is that Arnault (personally, not via company spokesman) responds to a major hit piece without at all accepting the role of defendant
He never complains about “biased reporters” or “they ignored our fact check” etc. He instead:
1) Does not flinch. He starts by giving the rebuttal a title: “Thank You.” Not “Addressing Recent Allegations” or whatever but implying the expose has backfired and made him look good.
Eg: “They used to call me The Terminator. I prefer ‘the last royal family.’ It’s more elegant, and probably better for Dior sales.”
Tone stays measured and bemused throughout; it’s giving Logan Roy
2) Lampoons the allegations. His wry humor makes the expose seem silly and theatrical, his tone is like he’s divulging a stupid child.
He opens with, “Apparently I am the head of ‘the last royal family of France’.”
And drops gems like, “At the Arnault family, apparently, we don’t argue, we conspire. We don’t deliberate, we plot. It’s novelistic… What, in an ordinary family, is simply called Sunday lunch becomes, in our case, an intrigue. It’s a matter of vocabulary.”
3) Reframes the whole narrative. From billionaire to steward, from an oligarch pursuing power to a patriarch preserving an institution built by and for others
Eg: “You describe power as though it were a prize to be won. I experience it as a responsibility to be passed on.
The houses entrusted to me are older than I am. Most will outlive me. My role is to hand them on stronger than I found them. That is why I reject the idea of a dynasty. Dynasties exist to preserve privileges. We work to preserve craftsmanship.”
Interestingly, in the very act of doing this Arnault shows how masterful he is at wielding power, and he summons that skill here to make the reporters look like bumbling neophytes

I’m the only Democrat in this race willing to say it:
Sacramento spending is up 75% in the last six years — but life sure doesn’t feel 75% better.
We need change.

Introducing Dawn 🌅
@varadh, @trq212 and I have been talking to a lot of ex-founders lately. There’s a community for every stage of starting a company. There isn’t one for what comes after.
So, we decided to start one.
Dawn Vol I is a small dinner. May 19th in SF. Off the record. Ex-founders only.

We have dozens of cookbooks for every type of cuisine in the world, but shockingly few places to turn for inspiration for crafting experiences for our loved ones and community.
Excited for this to be out in the world and for everyone to experience @zmwang creativity and magic!
I'm writing a cookbook for connection and launching the first recipes → cookbookforconnection.com
For 15+ years I've been the friend people texted at 11 pm before a big life thing.
"I'm walking into my first board meeting tomorrow, how do we build trust in the first 10 minutes?"
"I'm designing my 35th, help me make it more than a bar night."
"I'm going on a trip with my parents, how do we actually connect?"
"We're designing our intercultural wedding, how do we make it magical and not formulaic?"
🍽️ They each wanted a "recipe" for how to design an experience. I'm sharing some of the meaningful ones that helped them (ingredients, steps, and a little science explaining why it works).
👨👩👧 What I learned is that people wanted to connect with the most important people in their lives, but were stuck. Holidays with parents, date night with their partner, a cousin's trip, a team offsite, a birthday, a baby shower. We default to the same script and wonder why the night felt okay but not great. It's usually not a lack of love in the room. It is a lack of inspiration about how.
🍚 In the same way you pull up a food recipe when you want to cook something great for someone, I believe we need inspiration from recipes for the experiences we host. Magical recipes to teach people how to host, facilitate, and create the "vibes".
I will share a new recipe every Monday (cookbookforconnection.com).

Rippling AI was the most successful launch we've ever done. On the heels of this launch, Rippling's revenue is now growing 78% YoY (at ARR over $1 Billion). And this growth rate has now increased, every quarter, for three straight quarters.

California's population grew 0.4% in the last decade.
The number of state employees grew 24.5%.
Total state spending grew 48%, inflation adjusted.
You have to ask - where did all the money go?
Newsom has nearly doubled state spending, but where has the money gone?

1/ We are publishing the first proof that AI can reason as well as clinicians in live clinical environments. Our AI diagnosed ~2400 patients as accurately as board certified clinicians in a real environment and was 30 percentage points better than Google’s equivalent system.

California has increased spending by 75% in six years.
Are your bills 75% cheaper?
Are our schools 75% better?
No.
Because the problem isn’t how much we spend — it’s how we spend it. And I’ll only spend taxpayer dollars on policies that actually make people’s lives better.
Plan out tomorrow. Thanks for the conversation @friedberg!

"When you're 484 days underwater, you need to feel motivated and understand how what you're doing plays into a bigger picture. That's something I always try to do at @Nominal_io."
The bigger picture is global resilience. Nominal is the infrastructure for the teams building for the physical world.
We led Nominal's Series A and are doubling down on their $80M round led by @foundersfund at a $1B valuation.
All systems Nominal.

It’s time for a new member of Congress in Silicon Valley who prioritizes the advancement of technology and the continuation of the amazing job creation that the Silicon Valley ecosystem has produced for the last 25 years.
Let’s elect a member of our own tech community, Ethan Agarwal. Go Ethan!!!
These are the same people that fought building internet lines, cell towers, telephone cables, electrical systems, plumbing, printing presses, agriculture, etc etc since the beginning of time.
Civilization has to be dragged along because of people like this.
Today the HHS DOGE team open sourced the largest Medicaid dataset in department history.
This dataset contains aggregated, provider-level claims data for a specific billing code over time.
For example, using this dataset, it would have been possible to easily detect the large-scale autism diagnosis fraud seen in Minnesota.
