i was 24 working on my portfolio to apply to grad school when C19 disabled me and triggered the symptomatic phase of a genetic disorder. i’ve lost friends, family, my writing community, and my capacity to work a normal job. at times i can’t use my arms or walk/stand well.
COVID is the main driver in the increase of unemployment. I was 21, starting my career in aerospace engineering, when I was infected by COVID-19 - that ended immediately. I am now 25 and still unable to work a normal job. I am 1 in millions with this exact story.

Treating symptoms is not the same as treating dysfunction and damage. This is probably the single most important rule in chronic illness treatment and recovery. Both are important - most people focus just on symptoms. Just think about what this leads too. If recovery is the goal you need to use methods that help healing, that correct dysfunction, that help fix damage. The MCAS-leaky gut axis is a good example. Treating the symptoms of MCAS using antihistamines will not help fix the dysfunction of the leaky gut. In MECFS there are dozens of examples like this where 'treatment' focuses on the wrong thing. Go through your daily meds...think about what they are doing (and not doing).
This is a small case series of patients with refractory neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD and more, who experienced significant improvement after subsequent diagnosis and treatment of MCAS. While the average person still thinks that histamine for example is just something related to allergies, let’s not forget that histamine acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain, influencing things such as arousal, attention, mood, sleep, and motivation. So when levels build up it can create: -Restlessness and physical + mental hyperactivity -Difficulty concentrating, brain fog, inattention -Irritability, impulsivity, or agitation -Sleep disturbances (insomnia or poor sleep quality) -Anxiety or sensory sensitivities -Hyper arousal -Racing thoughts, anxiety/panic, or restlessness -Insomnia or disrupted sleep cycles (common in manic phases) -Depressive symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, low motivation) during crashes -Emotional lability or energy fluctuations Of course, we don’t pull all these out of our asses. There are more reports noting that histamine flares can mimic manic/depressive episodes, and MCAS patients sometimes receive initial bipolar diagnoses.

This seems almost like half of the Holy Grail of the neuroimmune axis. Imagine being able to do a complex analysis of the state of health/disease of the immune system! Not just # of diff types of cells, but what states they are in, what the history of it is, how functional etc.
We're unable to measure our immune system status in the clinic. But that is about to change. Our @nature piece today, w/ @HugoAerts @nbirkbak @TsangLab nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

We need new tests to measure the immune system status and tests to measure the autonomic nervous system function in the clinic and at home. We need to move forward with new diagnostic tests and not get stuck in the past with tests that are suboptimal and/or outdated.

This LDN result only reinforces the need for subgrouping in long Covid clinical trials. LDN was a lifesaver for me when it came to pain and I can guarantee it wasn’t placebo, it took my pain from a 9 to a 2 out of 10 in weeks after many other medications failed for pain relief.
University of British Columbia researchers conducted a randomized trial of 160 Long COVID patients. Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) did not significantly improve fatigue, pain, physical activity, or quality of life compared with placebo after 16 weeks. medrxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Stanford researchers propose that Long COVID and ME/CFS may disrupt the brain’s waste removal systems. Impaired autophagy and glymphatic clearance could allow toxic proteins to accumulate, contributing to brain fog, fatigue, and neuroinflammation. mdpi.com/1422-0067/27/20/935…

On the “prepare 3 days worth of rations, in case of emergency” — I keep seeing people ask “what they know” — but it’s not some secret, these threats or a combination of them have all been hurtling towards us: FOOD AND CLIMATE
• El Niño crop failures, worsened by fertiliser shortages and storms
• Extreme heat and flooding hitting already fragile food systems WAR
• Trump loses the midterms badly, then attacks Iran again, risking nuclear war
• Wider escalation involving Russia or China TECHNOLOGY
• An AI-engineered bioweapon
• AI-enabled attacks on national infrastructure
• AI job loss on a massive scale, with no plan for unemployment, leading to mass social conflict DISEASE
• Pneumonic plague that appeared in Russia, in the news for a day, then dropped
• Antimicrobial resistance
• Weakened pandemic response as aid budgets are cut INSTITUTIONS AND ECONOMY
• Collapse of the UN and the humanitarian system, leading to mass refugee flows and global instability
• Another massive and worse sovereign debt or financial crisis
