Commodity "Widow-Maker" Trades - A comprehensive field guide A "widow-maker" is a trade that looks attractive on paper (mean-reverting, carry-positive, statistically cheap, or seasonally obvious) but has a long, nasty left tail driven by structural asymmetries: storage/delivery mechanics, weather, political risk, illiquidity, or short-gamma dynamics. The common thread is bounded upside, unbounded downside, and a payoff profile dominated by rare but catastrophic events. Starting a little thread.

This pumping station on the Saudi East-West pipeline was showing around 120MW fire on 15:30Z today, which is too high for regular flaring and suggests a strike or emergency flaring. It was still bright two hours later.

Picture of the day: Orbán hanging out at the terrace of Hotel Normandy in Paris, on the October 23 Hungarian national holiday. Honestly, he could just be relaxing or looking at his phone, but the image got a new, symbolic meaning in the Hungarian press as the "exiled, isolated strongman".

Fertilizer through Hormuz has dropped to zero. No fertilizer cargoes crossing the strait in September or October. Before the war, about 20% of the world’s traded nitrogen fertilizer went through it, Fertilizer Daily reports. The Gulf also supplies about half of the world’s traded sulfur. Hear me out: urea isn’t the problem. China raised its nitrogen exports about 47% and the US about 60%. By the end of August urea was back to its January price, IFPRI data shows. Sulfur is the problem. It has more than doubled, to above $1,000 a tonne, and phosphate is up 25–30%. You need sulfur to make phosphate fertilizer. Mosaic has idled two Louisiana plants, and India’s fertilizer subsidy bill could pass 3 trillion rupees, against 1.71 trillion budgeted. Oil found other ways out of the Gulf. Sulfur hasn’t. source: World Visualized

Security Alert: U.S. Mission Saudi Arabia (October 25, 2026) Effective October 23, 2026, the Department of State ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and U.S. government employee family members to leave Saudi Arabia due to safety risks. Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure resulting in civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions. The hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly beyond that immediate area. U.S. government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorization from Chief of Mission to use any airport in Saudi Arabia following recent missile and UAV attacks on airports in the Kingdom. King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh announced a partial reopening as of October 25 for domestic flights and some international flights operated by national carriers. A limited number of flights normally based at RUH are operating out of Qassim-based Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz International Airport (ELQ). Operations at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah (JED) are operational with some delays and cancellations. Operations at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam (DMM) are operational with some delays and cancellations. U.S. citizens should be aware of potential attacks on airports, airspace closures, flight cancellations, and travel disruptions.  Please take extreme caution if you choose to use airports in Saudi Arabia.  We recommend checking your flight departure status directly with the airline and with the airport. Barak chipping in, the situation must be desperate for Bibi. The latest polls were rather clear.

Washing the dirty laundry in public. This guy is potentially the new prime minister.

Bibi making Bibi moves. Not particularly a new discourse, agreed, but interesting a mere couple of days of an election he's likely to lose.

Ekections postponed and strikes advanced. Big if true
BREAKING: Netanyahu says Iran has now restarted its nuclear program and intends to destroy Israel within a short time. "Iran has restarted its nuclear program, and it wants to destroy us within a short time," Netanyahu said an hour ago. IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has warned that resuming the war this close to Tuesday's election will force the vote to be postponed indefinitely. Netanyahu said on Wednesday that toppling the Iranian regime is now his directive to the IDF and Mossad.

AI is the fiercest imaginable bullshit job destroyer. Many white collar roles are going extinct and that is probably alright. Priviledged people will be affected the most and that might lead to cliques and nepotism to try to slow down the AI onslaught. The mass layoff starts probably in six months and ramp up from there. If you are in such a position, you've got little time left to make bank. Gonna be lit.
The problem isn’t that AI is intelligent. It isn’t. The problem is that too many adults (but not all) are at once mechanistic, imitative, unimaginative, stupid, formulaic, influenceable, & gullible, arrogant beyond their skill set, & too expensive to maintain.

Netanyahu might get toppled by next Tuesday's election, and subsequently go to jail for corruption once he loses immunity. Attacking Iran now might give him a few % boost in the ballot that he desperately needs. Trump needs to survive the midterms. US warplanes in the Middle East have switched of their transponders. The IRGC won't go out without a bang, and may consider to preempt an offensive. Rien ne va plus ... faites vos jeux !

The Pentagon has spent months building a new agency to covertly disrupt and sabotage foreign technology programs seen as threats to U.S. military superiority, according to a dozen current and former U.S. national security officials who spoke to Politico. The Pentagon denies it with Deputy press secretary Jacob Bliss saying the claims are “simply not true.” The White House did not respond to Politico's request for comment. The Technology Support Office (TSO) was established in April, the officials say. Politico reports it is mentioned in previously unreported Department of War records, including a memo Deputy Secretary of War Steve Feinberg signed April 14 placing it under the Under Secretary of War for Intelligence and Security. Its goal is to “buy time or stop adversaries from developing technologies” that most threaten the U.S. military in a major conflict, one former official said. The sources describe building hacking tools and planning deception operations, such as tricking adversaries into installing faulty components in weapons. Politico reports TSO lacks legal authority to conduct clandestine operations itself and works with military and intelligence officers who do. It was built by merging two classified Pentagon intelligence programs that have run smaller tech sabotage efforts since 2023. Sources say Special Operations Command and Cyber Command objected, fearing budget cuts. While budget details are unclear, one former official estimated classified contracts alone are likely more than $1.5 billion. Source: politico.com/news/2026/10/22…
