With his mate Andy Burnham in Number 10 Steve Rotheram's shopping list may look something like this...
- Tram system £2bn
- River barrage £6bn
- High speed rail £45bn
- Central Station £5bn
- Merseyrail network - free transfer
How much will he get?

What makes this depressing is that it theoretically met NIMBY criteria.
Aesthetic, built with local stone, provides cheap groceries during a cost-of-living crisis. All built *literally* on an empty grass field.
But, no dice. They don't actually want to build anything at all.

The UK sometimes does this funny thing where it decides that one tiny, tiny sliver of the country (Manchester city centre, Canary Wharf, etc.) should actually be allowed to grow if it wants to, and then this happens.
Town over the last 10 years.
A change for the better or are we thinking it should have been left as it was?

I’ve written many times about how the soft left on Labour’s backbenches are ‘economic illiterates’. This is proof positive. Beyond redemption in its misunderstanding of markets, supply, demand, taxes.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply.
Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply.
Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents.

Criticism of Israel: "I don't agree with the Israeli government's policies, here's what I would do instead"
Not criticism of Israel: making gas chamber noises at Jewish children.

Owen Jones has done a 16 tweet thread explaining how a 14 year old Jewish student being called a “Jew bitch” and physically assaulted while another is taunted with gas chamber noises is just criticism of Israel.

It’s important to not lose sight of what Mehdi Hasanabi, Barry Baloney, the head of the fucking NEU and Owen Buffer Zone Jones are trying to minimise here.
This is a national scandal. An unacceptable situation for British children to be facing.
And they’re trying to bury it.
Replying to @daverich1
For example: *every pupil* in a class at a Jewish school visited by the review had personally experienced antisemitism on their journey to or from school. That class is not exceptional. If this was about racist abuse towards black children, Jones would not try to downplay it.

That’s nice and all, but if Britain had set up a sovereign wealth fund from North Sea fossil fuel proceeds, Labour would have ransacked it to pay for people’s benefits long ago…
‘We'd have a British sovereign wealth fund now that will be worth probably a trillion pounds’
Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP suggests what Britain could have gained if it had set up an energy wealth fund like Norway’s back in the 1980s

Government review: We are seeing an alarming rise in Jewish children being racially abused and harassed at school.
The British Left: I don't believe this, how much of that abuse & harassment targeted towards children is actually just legitimate criticism of the state of Israel?

UK crime was four times higher when Oasis first played Knebworth than at last year’s reunion gigs.
The collapse of crime and safer streets is one of the biggest stories of our time.
But one almost never told - or believed.
