I met this kid in Mohlakeng after my football match. Masiringa besi ova ngesiSotho. “Grootman laka sheba hierso, ke kopa ho shapela Di bars” When that kid started spitting he had a full on English verse, crafted quite well, flows incredibly. It just made me think about influence. How you can really be a product of what you consume, but beyond that, the elasticity of the human brain. The adaptability of the South African mind. This kid has a linguistic advantage. He is fluent in his home language and fluent in English, or at least he is when he raps. I think that’s amazing. Once he blends the languages, with the skill that he is already honing, he becomes a super rap South African musician. The greatest rap musicians we’ve had in this country started off as English rappers because rap was 100% American influenced, and then they began incorporating the language of their upbringing. The figures of speech taught in English class were translated into vernacular. The understanding of puns, similes, metaphors, alliteration etc. To single out my favourite rapper Prokid, I could tell that he executed his Zulu raps with the rules of English literature, further extending his poetic license, making him impossible to stop because he used 2 or 3 languages in one verse, utilising different idioms and phrases from all of them. KO, Jabba, Kwesta, Kid X, Khuli and that boy from eMambisa are a few others that I can think of. In case you were wondering, niggas flowing in 3/4 different languages is not common and not normal, but it’s a breeze in Mzansi because we’re a special nation, we’re just always waiting for an outsider to point it out. 🇿🇦 Kaofela
