"the character is the tone map. everything else is interpretation." there was a reason i ended my last article with this. the next stage: leave your trace onchain.

A closer look at how Trace characters are made. From 3D models to ASCII, color, and light. More details in the full article below.

to switch between monochrome and color: 1. go to the "Switch" tab on the website 2. select the characters you want to update 3. save your changes you can switch back anytime. traceforms.xyz
One of the ideas behind Trace is that each stage is a piece of art on its own. And only holders decide how their NFTs look: encoded, decoded, monochrome, or color. Now you can switch between the original monochrome and color versions of your characters directly on our website. The choice of how your Trace exists is yours. traceforms.xyz

details. each character is made up of 8-12 layers, stacked and blended in real time directly in your browser using onchain data. it all starts with a 65×39 grid. then come: > color > color flow > burn effect > chromatic aberration > up to five layers of glow > glow dispersion > light rays using character #931 as an example: if you look closely, you'll notice there's no orange in its original palette. the glyphs are green and magenta, and the orange only appears where the glow layers overlap. this is just one example of how colors interact across the collection.

6/ The rarity rank on our site compares your character with all 3,888 characters, including those that haven’t been decoded yet. That’s its final rank, so it won’t shift as more people decode. Legendary: top 1%. Epic: top 10%. Rare: top 25%. There are also 1/1s. You can look up any Trace without connecting a wallet. There’s a 1-minute intro on the site too: decode.traceforms.xyz

5/ Blink and Rain are animated Bases. They work like any other Base, but using one also gives you a chance to win an extra Trace from the vault. Any prize is sent directly to your wallet. On OpenSea, look for Method “Base” and Motion “Animated”. You can check the current odds on the decoding site.

4/ To decode, head to decode.traceforms.xyz, connect your wallet and choose your Ciphers. Confirm the transaction. Your Bases burn, and Chainlink VRF randomly draws a character for each Cipher. It usually takes 2-3 minutes for your characters to appear. They keep the same token IDs and stay in your wallet.

3/ You need a Base to decode a Cipher. The Base burns, and the Cipher becomes your character. Any Base works with any Cipher, so choosing a different Base won’t improve your character odds. Base + Cipher = Character. On OpenSea, look for “Base” under the “Method” trait.

2/ A Cipher is an encoded Trace. You won’t know which character you’ll get until you decode it. We don’t know beforehand either. There are 7 Cipher types. Rarer types give you a better chance of getting an uncommon character. You can find Ciphers on OpenSea by checking the “Method” trait: Base64, Binary or Punched card.

1/ New to Trace? Here’s how it works. Trace is a fully on-chain collection of 7,777 NFTs by @0xvesty. The art starts in 3D and is converted to ASCII using custom tools. Everything you see is made of letters, numbers and symbols. Each Trace is either a Base, a Cipher or a Character.
