#OTD 24 October AD 51, T. Flavius Domitianus was born. He would become Rome's 8th 'princeps' during which time, "He read nothing except the memoirs and transactions of Tiberius Caesar (Suet., Dom. 20).

51: Domitian born.
He became the last ruler of the Flavian dynasty & reigned 15yrs; longer than any Emperor since Tiberius (but with less deep cleaning afterwards). Domitian saw himself as a new Augustus, a title he often used, along with 'dominus et deus' (master & god).

Watching Wes Streeting warning the population to stock up on essentials in case of disaster.
Can GP’s all be authorised to issue two month prescriptions? Currently only one month can be requested.

Just another completely ordinary day in Ancient Rome...

A beautiful #Roman gold necklace, with large oval amethysts & square emerald chips set into the links. An absolutely lovely piece of ancient jewellery which is more than 1700 years old

Now this is the nuanced conversation we need to be having about what having a disability is really like. But it is drowned out by loud mouths who are seething with envy about the disabled taking taxis or ordering takeaways or owning mobile phones unable to comprehend the why.
Almost everyone underestimates the impact of disabilities on day-to-day stuff.
Getting dressed, for example. Showering. Making a sandwich. Going to the doctors. Getting on a bus. Food shopping. These things can be horribly painful, time-consuming and exhausting.
And that's for the more mobile among us with less severe disabilities. I'm someone who can do wheelchair half marathons without really batting an eye, but showering, dressing and going out to socialise is seriously hard work.
A few hours socialising can take the rest of the day (or longer) to prepare for and is sure to have a severe backlash the next day.
Many if not most disabled people have more bad days than good. On bad days there might be no chance of doing any of these things at all. People don't see that for the straightforward reason that we're not there.
It's one of of the main reasons disabled people tend to withdraw from social life and shed social capital. It's one of the main factors contributing to the isolation of disabled people.
I'm not complaining, this is just how things are. But think about how hard it is for @factualmama to do a simple thing like make apple crumble for pure pleasure, the compromises she has to make and the price she has to pay.
People are fond of saying that not all disabilities are visible and of course that's true. But also most of the ways disabilities really suck are invisible too.
A.m. writing.
'But there’s more to throwing a successful coup than just sitting on a chair and declaring you’re the king now, because we could all do that on a tour of Buckingham Palace if swift of foot enough when the security guard happens to be looking the other direction'
I have a new podcast up on leadership in ancient Rome! Compared to most podcasts I do it's a PG (although naturally I squeeze in a phallus reference).
Find out what makes a good Roman Emperor & how Galba, Otho & Vitellius f*ck it up & Vesapsian doesn't

I'm on camera for this podcast recording on Sex & Sexuality in Ancient Greece. You can tell that I'm at peak Parkinsons meds because I'm very fidgety. I don't notice it nor that I tend to talk out the side of my mouth these days.

Obviously Jaws is my all time favourite film but some of the special effects have dated so it can't be considered flawless.
I'm starting to think that people really don't understand what a disability is. You know it hurts right? That it can be excruciatingly painful. That it's no longer safe for you to do anything on your own like use public transport. take your own kids out, leave the house.

Because we have to slave away sacrificing our friends, family time, health whilst you have complete freedom.

Alongside which you will find thoughts & beliefs that are so alien as to blow your mind.
As anyone who has ever met me will confirm I can't half talk about sex in antiquity. But the Greeks render even me a bit mealy mouthed. Because there are awkward topics to be found in ancient Greece.... listen as I verbally tip toe around them.
