BREAKING: Civil rights leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr. has officially been posthumously pardoned, and Howard University School of Law professors and students had a hand in this effort. For 15 years, Prof. Justin Hansford worked with Garvey’s son to secure this historic acknowledgment. In 1923, Garvey was convicted on one count mail fraud as president of the shipping and passenger company the Black Star Line, for using the mail to defraud someone into buying stock in the company. “This pardon acknowledges the wrongful nature of his trial and conviction, affirms Garvey’s innocence, and uplifts Garvey’s unique contribution to the international cause of human rights, justice, and civil rights for all people worldwide,” Hansford said. Watching Rick Ross, Soulja Boy, Nelly, and Snoop dogg all perform at Trump’s inaugural event adds an extreme amount of validation to what Malcolm X said about some black celebrities being puppets. This man was a prophet 💯

I was a public defender for years. Whether you call it solitary, “protective custody,” or the box: my clients were experiencing torture. I watched as it broke them down. This torture didn’t improve safety — it guaranteed trauma.

What we call yams in the U.S. is a sweet potato. These are yams. Why the confusion? Food historian and author Jessica B. Harris says that enslaved Africans didn’t have access to yams but the next closest thing to it in the New World was the sweet potato. So they called them yams.

If the government wanted to pay #reparations, it could. Read the new study “Normalizing Reparations: U.S. Precedent, Norms, and Models for Compensating Harms and Implications for Reparations to Black Americans” by @LJBilmes and @CornellWBrooks. hks.harvard.edu/centers/mrcb…

Don’t ever talk to me about how Black people aren’t owed reparations because no one alive has suffered what the reparations are for. These survivors for more than a century have stubbornly refused to die, only to be denied justice again and again. That is despite the fact that the state of Oklahoma’s own task force recommended reparations. When it comes to descendants of slavery, this country has always engaged in the tactic of delay until death. That is why reparations MUST include descendants. What is the statute of limitations on crimes against humanity?

The lack of history with women's basketball is so irritating. I'm old enough to remember the superstars that were Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Rebecca Lobo, and other Team USA players from back in the day. Clark literally *just* got to the league. People need to chill.
Thanks, David. Having covered the Olympics for 40 years (gulp), I’ve seen some bad team and athlete selection decisions. This is the worst. Makes absolutely no sense for a women’s sport that would have been catapulted onto the world stage in the greatest way possible with Clark.

Atlanta doesn't have clean water but has a $100 million cop city project. NYC libraries are closed Sundays, but our mayor wants a $225 million cop city. The U.S. doesn't have universal healthcare but we spend a trillion on war. Under capitalism violence comes before human needs.

I LOVE that people are talking about women's basketball and that we have new stars to love or hate. But it's noticeable that male commentators still struggle with women gaining attention and success. Add the white women vs. Black women frame, and we have chaos.

This was a great chance to be accountable. NO ONE outside a small group was actively following the WNBA the way people are now. Instead he further supported what Monica said about being a woman in sports. I haven’t seen SAS do all this for anyone else but a woman attacks him and this what we get. SMH 🤦🏾‍♀️

the emphasis on this location over Brawley and the white-over-black nature of “citizen outrage” are working to both make coherent a post-Beltline “Westside” geography, as it, at the same time clarifies that The Bluff & its residents’ long history watershed woes are the unthought
.@andreforatlanta is expected to hold a press conference in about 10 minutes along W Peachtree Street in Midtown to address the city’s continued water issues. Stay tuned @ajc

103 years ago, a white supremacist mob killed hundreds of Black residents, burned more than 1,250 homes, and destroyed years of Black success in Tulsa, Oklahoma.   We must never forget the Tulsa Race Massacre and the deep roots of racial violence in this nation.

Never talk to police without a lawyer. Never ever. Never. Ever. If they show up to your house to ask questions, call your lawyer before talking to them. If you don't have a lawyer, tell the police to come back w/ a warrant. Do not talk to the police on your own. Never. Ever. 👮🚫

There were many “Doors of No Return” in West Africa—this is one in the Elmina Castle on the coast of Ghana. Few know of the direct connection between this fortress and Georgetown, S.C. Let’s get into it.

It makes “anti woke” scolds so mad when I mention my aunts and uncles went to segregated schools— when I say my parents were born into an apartheid country. Sorry, facts don’t care about your feelings.
