I don't think they would have to even discuss it 🤷‍♂️ Touch is a secondary input method on Windows laptops for years and at the end, it never hurt nobody. It is genuinely useful to scroll by finger from time to time, or tap some button instead of having to drag a cursor there.
Within Apple, Cook and Ternus both felt that customers had begun to expect touch screens on Macs. But the company’s industrial design team remained opposed to the idea. The compromise was to create a device where touch was an option but not the primary interface.

The only thing I worry is that it would make UI elements *even bigger* than now, because developers would suddenly think that every app needs to support touch fully 😒

It is barely over a week that apps even can be submitted for the Duo support. Of course Marques tested what he had, so at day one it still be relatively rough but thousands of apps should be updated at day one already. Those big ones though... they might struggle.

Why Device Hub is not at least sorting properly simulators that are not available? 🤔 Currently I have only iOS 27.2 and 26.5 simulators installed - so all other simulators should be in the “Unavailable” section, right?

This is a step backwards. The red background was at least distinctive. What are we doing here?

I disagree - vertical tab bar was always just a compromise. Also please note that in this orientation, we would loose a lot more content space for just few buttons on the side. This is probably also the way I'll be using device the most for reading.
Good point about the lack of consistency. My biggest issue with the vertical bar is that the content area feels off-centered to account for it. Maybe I'll get used to it, but it's an eye-sore for now.

Dear Apple API team, Please add an idiom for iPhone Duo We can’t be checking for model/device numbers in 2026 😬

this is not native-vs-overengineered multiplatform reinvented framework debate. but this is User Experience debate. Why, why, how the computer application launch on M5 MacBook takes 9 seconds (and 2 GB memory) to show a window with text input on it. This is not normal. somethning is not great with the new software. ChatGPT app time-to-launch codex is ~9 seconds Commander app time-to-launch codex is ~2 seconds

I launch Codex/ChatGPT and it takes 2.5GB memory doing nothing - is impressive for a chat app

I would just prefer two separate apps 🤷‍♂️ 1. A simple agent/chat to handle everyday questions and tasks but also some work, with access to files, apps, etc. 2. A dedicated Codex app for advanced agentic workflows and coding. Why this behemoth of an app with 3 separate modes? 🤷‍♂️

It's fine especially that web browsing will be done mostly in unfolded state 🤷‍♂️ This is why you buy this device in the first place right?
Still buying but this vertical system bar isn't it 🥴

But I can imagine that most web browsing on this device will be happening in unfolded portrait orientation 🤔

iPhone Duo might take the crown from iPad for best kitchen companion. Crouton feels very fun even in the simulator! Still rough around the edges, but enjoying this direction.

Hmm, I thought it doesn't come with any apps except Settings 🤔 At least mine doesn't... What's the trick?
Replying to @twostraws
That sound you can hear is 100,000 developers opening and closing a virtual Duo again and again 😂

If “slop grenade” isn’t the term of the year, I don’t know what is. Respect your peers’ time. Be thoughtful, even in a world moving this fast. Don’t throw slop grenades.
Lazy work used to mean too little output. Now, with AI, it often means too much and more work for everyone else. @tobi call it "slop grenades." A "Slop Grenade" is when you let AI produce the work and pass it on without adding any value (including checking it). Someone else has to wade through it, catch the mistakes, and clean up the mess. You save time and look productive but someone else pays for it.

I would say it's a "sidegrade" 🤔 Some things are genuinely better, like more sensible and easier access to device controls and properties. But some are downgraded, like taking screenshots - for some reason I can no longer copy it to clipboard 🤷‍♂️
I feel that the new device hub is a massive downgrade to what we had with simulators previously.

And why this window frame when in "mini" mode? 🤔 Also keeping simulators running after closing all windows is also not intuitive and might surprise many...

They've waited to be able to make it at least as thin as first iPhone 👀
Original iPhone v. iPhone Duo

Apple clearly sees iPhone Duo as its own thing - not quite iPhone, not quite iPad 📱 It gets some iPad features, but will it also support: • Mac Continuity keyboard & mouse • Acting as a Mac external display 🖥️ Those two would make it more compelling for Mac power users 🤔

To be honest, I don't think it would support it at the beginning (maybe we already know something about it?) - but it would be an interesting evolution down the line...
