i am starting a very modest newsletter concern. it's free and will be no great chore to consume. just a playlist culled from my listening and a quotation culled from my reading, every Friday. first edition arrives tomorrow. link below and in my bio. INDULGE

i don't agree with vinson about the movie (i liked it) but i agree that "it's actually about 'truth' and documentaries" is a pretty weak defense, and not really even very accurate
why do people think this is hard to understand? it's not sufficient as a defense for a film to point out its obvious theme. which dimension of this very old and often explored question did the actual filmmaking, choice of subject, etc, help illuminate or deepen for you?

very frustrating. it seems to me that i—the person having the point of a movie explained to me—am the one being condescended to. a mystery that perhaps only Nathan Fielder can help unfold.
The classic opening line that is custom-designed to win over the people to whom you are, of course, not condescending: “why do people think this is hard to understand?”

this is a perfectly admirable thing to say about the movie—i laughed at parts. i think it's a pretty naked spectacle masquerading as philosophy—and much of the conversation about it is devoted to insisting that the spectacle isn't there, or really the point.
Replying to @vcunningham
Mostly, I think it was fun—esp once Amanda arrived. As for Holmes, well, it is useful to show psychopathic lying for what it is.

seems to me that much comes down to how entertained, shocked, galled, etc, the viewer is by Holmes, Evans, and Fielder. which is fine!

i tire of the apophatic defense of artworks that goes "so...it's NOT actually about this and NOT about that either...." not so craftily shrinking and shrinking the surface area of possible critique. show me on the doll what's supposed to matter!

often this maneuver doesn't even make sense. for instance: if a film DOESN'T care about ANY given truth claim, how can it at the same time be an exploration of the nature of truth?

The Billy Evans dick-measuring contest is over. @vcunningham won. “California brown homesteader dick, horse & buggy dick. A dick that says I live in the house I built. Joan Didion dick. Santa Ana Winds dick. Donner Party dick. Tan speckled kettlebell ass.” podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…
